But It’s True!

Peggy Noonan joins the long list of horrified Democrats deploring Hillary Clinton’s comments that she has a base of support among white voters and Barack Obama does not. Yes, I agree it was surprising that she said it. But her saying it isn’t the problem. Indeed, Paul Krugman wrote the same thing:

There’s just one thing that should give Democrats pause — but it’s a big one: the fight for the nomination has divided the party along class and race lines in a way that I believe is unprecedented, at least in modern times.Ironically, much of Mr. Obama’s initial appeal was the hope that he could transcend these divisions. At first, voting patterns seemed consistent with this hope. In February, for example, he received the support of half of Virginia’s white voters as well as that of a huge majority of African-Americans. But this week, Mr. Obama, while continuing to win huge African-American majorities, lost North Carolina whites by 23 points, Indiana whites by 22 points. Mr. Obama’s white support continues to be concentrated among the highly educated; there was little in Tuesday’s results to suggest that his problems with working-class whites have significantly diminished.

Clinton’s comment is not quite like the 3 a.m. ad: John McCain can’t turn around and run ads saying “Even Hillary says white voters don’t support Obama.” She didn’t give the Republicans some rhetorical advantage. She was caught remarking on a very unpleasant and troubling question for Democrats. It’s the key question for the fall: what kind of coalition can Obama put together?

If it’s the McGovern-like grab bag of African Americans, ultra-liberals, and young voters, he’ll lose, and maybe even in some states Democrats have traditionally counted in the their column (e.g. Pennsylvania). If he inherits the blue-collar voters from Clinton, sprints to the center and successfully re-runs the 2006 election (“throw the bums out!”) he’ll win. But as disagreeable and annoying as Clinton may be to the Democratic establishment and mainstream media, this potential for electoral polarization and defeat is not Clinton’s doing. She just reminded them of their worst fears. How dare she.

  1. Brian says:

Hey Israel, y’know how in recent years you’ve been all alone except for America? Well, now you’re really all alone.

  2. Dave says:

Well, he could have been talking about Hamas giving the Palestinians no hope of a state.

  3. lester says:

what an obnoxious and thankfully short column by abe

  4. Alexander Almasov says:

So we’re supposed to think that the short least one knows from obnoxious? As if he were capable of so much self-reflection!

  5. lester says:

An Israeli landed at Kennedy Airport in New York

At the control the officer asked:
    - ” Occupation ? ”

    The Israeli answers:
    - ” No, just for visit. “

  6. elen says:

Lester, you soooo cute. Almost as Obama’s daughters.

  7. BIG PICTURE says:

There will be no lasting peace until the Jews treat the Arabs as fellow human beings.

That has always been the problem. THE END.

  8. elTaosneo says:

BP … of course, you could say the same about the Arabs treating the Jews as fellow human beings, too. I think the constant references to them as “pigs”, vendettas allowing only for the death of all Jews, suicide bombers and random attempts to kill civilians with rockets would indicated that the Arabs have a long way to go.

  9. BIG PICTURE says:

    To elTaosneo,

Before the Zionists came to Palestine, the Arabs and Jews lived peacefully together , for hundreds of years.

Now you know the fundamental cause of the problems. Of course, we all know this but lie to ourselves. Takes courage to face the truth.

  10. Maine's Michael says:

    BIG PICTURE

    Look up Hebron Massacre.

    Fookin’ ignoramus.

How did you ever learn to walk?

  11. Daniel Gold says:

I’m with you, Abe. I, too, wish Obama would drop the “humanizing” nonsense and recognize Arabs for the savage animals they are. Jews will never be safe until they are wiped off the map. Why are you the only one who acknowledges this fact?

  12. BIG PICTURE says:

    To Maine’s Michael,

So what year was the Belfour Declaration? 1918, right?

What year was the Hebron Massacre? !929, right? In the middle of a large immigration drive by the Zionists.

Even though you are trying to be deceptive, I in no way support any Arab pogroms against the Jews.

Deception, I find, is a common theme I encounter in this dispute.

  13. Adam says:

The Palestinians have declared war on Israel and supported the party openly calling for its destruction–they have left no ambguity. BP’s idiotic phrase, “treat the Arabs like human beings,” evades the basic problem even for Israelis who fervidly wish to make a deal with the Palestinians: who can imagine a deal that any Palestinian government could be counted on to enforce? They will either not want to enforce a two state solution which requires explicit and verifiable recognition of Israel, or they will be overthrown by others who don’t want such a deal. So, all such talk is meaningless. In the meantime, the way to treat those who declare and wage war on you as “human” is to wage war on them–basic reciprocity. It is treating warmakers and terrorists as if they are desperate, trapped animals who can’t behave differently that is dehumanizing. And that is what the international Left has done to the Palestinians. In the end, it will be up to the Israelis to give the Palestinians no choice but to accept what they can get now or they will lose any chance of ever getting anything. Then, peace might be possible.

  14. g says:

Yes, little photo, before the muslims overtook the levant, the maghreb, and the fertile crescent, everybody lived peacefully. Before the arabs and the romans ethnically cleansed Israel, the lamb laid with the lion. Happy to hear you’ve finally denounced those pogroms.

  15. Alexander A. K. Hoggsbuckle IV says:

    Obama is an arrogant idiot.

  16. Joe says:

Well, Obama might mention again how he looooooves the sound of the muzzin at sundown next time he is speaking with the Israeli embassador.

And when he speaks to Hamas, with no pre conditions of course, he can mention his love of the shofar!

  17. Dan says:

Sure, so long as Jews accepted their dhimmi status, accepted their subhuman status, accepted the not infrequent pogrom, accepted the not infrequent episode of gang rape, —————————————– sure so long as Jews accepted all of that, there was a “peace” that prevailed.

But it was never a true peace, based on justice, based on GENUINE morality.

Once Jews refused to accept a subhuman status, once they decided they weren’t going to put up with it anymore, once they accepted they would stand on their own two feet, regardless of the existential crisis that would trigger in the Arab world, ———————– once that happened “peace” ended.

    And war began.

And war will endure, ————————- so long as jihad exists, so long as the great warlord mohammad is understood as THE example for all muslims, so long as Arabs continue to use islam as a platform for their own racial supremacism, ————————— then war will continue until the seas gives up their dead.

And time itself is no more.

It’s ALL about islam. It’s about NOTHING else but islam.

And it’s got NOTHING to do with “occupation,” it’s got NOTHING to do with the Palestinians, or rather the “palestinians,” because they’re just a prop, a proxie, an excuse, which weak and intellectually shabby Westerners buy into, and they buy into it because they’re SCARED.

    SCARED.

    Frightened out of their minds.

And so they lean on the Jews.

    Strongarm the Jews.

    Pressure the Jews.

  18. elen says:

Islam started with ethnic cleansing of Jews in Arabian peninsula and Jews had lived there for thousand years or more before Muhammad birth. In fact they built major cities there.

  19. elen says:

Mark Twain’s visit to Lebanon, Syria, and the Holy Land in 1867 was published in “The Innocents Abroad”, where he described Palestine as follows:

“….. A desolate country whose soil is rich enough, but is given over wholly to weeds… a silent mournful expanse…. a desolation…. we never saw a human being on the whole route…. hardly a tree or shrub anywhere. Even the olive tree and the cactus, those fast friends of a worthless soil, had almost deserted the country.” (The Innocents Abroad, p. 361-362)

  20. jaywhite says:

To the twin idiots Brian and Lester : Brian :Israel doesn’t need the US which does more harm to Israel than help. To Lester: Speaking of occupation : When are you going to end your occupation of lands on which your ancestors robbed ,displaced and murdered indigenous people. Stupid hypocrite.

  21. jaywhite says:

Big picture:Do you call yourself “Big Picture” to compensate for your small brain?

  22. New Brunswick Barry says:

Big Picture: That’s “Balfour,” you ignorant twit.

  23. Margo says:

BP, the Jews lived among the Arabs in a state of dhimmitude. When you’re dhimmi, you get special taxes, you can’t testify in court, yopu have to wear special clothes to mark you out, etc. Not peaceful.

  24. Dear Abe,

Could you please do something about your son, Glenn, over there at stalin.com (salon.com)?

Seriously, he and the entire site parrots each and every anti Israel smear. They are the left wing of the left wing (although they sometimes feature interesting cultural stuff such as a fantastic 2 page love story about a guy who met the love of his life on an almost empty subway.

I do not have the time to research his background, but if it’s your fault, perhaps you could apologize to him or at least to us. Did you spank him for stealing? Did you turn him against religion with a sadistic Hebrew Teacher? Did you reject him when he came out?

    Please, what gives?

    Cheers,

    Zolt

  25. lester says:

jaywhite- when they can mount an army that is a threat to ours we will have to fight them. and no, I don’t think they have to accept americas existence.

we fought them for hundreds of years for this land and i dobt there are americans who begrudge them that

  26. BIG PICTURE says:

    To Margo,

Peaceful, yes, but not necessary equal. In Muslim Spain, the Jews were held at a higher status than even the average Muslim.

In Europe during the same times, the situation was much worse than the Jews. That same European attitude of arrogance has been carried over by the Zionists.
