The article quoted a Jew in Iran’s second largest city claiming he never had any trouble and had no interest in Israel, except that Israel “should stop murdering Gazans,” or something very much like that.

Roger Cohen’s article had a 1930′s flavor – remember those journalists coming back from famine stricken Ukraine to describe the ‘workers’ paradise’? And what better replica of those vile apologists than a Jew like Roger Cohen who finds another Jew and sing the praises of Iran’s theocracy? The Iranian is a victim who has little choice but to sing from the score sheet. Cohen has a return ticket to freedom and should know better. That he chose to be complicit in the lie is a shame – for him, for the Gray Lady, and for the profession.
It reminded me of the First Gulf War, when Saddam Hussein paraded the president of Baghdad’s Jewish community on Western TV, and had him sing his praise. That a Jew living under such tyrants would lie to the world to save himself is not a surprise. That a Western journalist would believe it is the real news. Had the Globalist got something tangible in exchange from the Iranians – money, a carpet, a pistachio supply, 10,000 barrels of crude a day, something to bribe him into writing what he wrote, at least we’d know his problem would be one of moral integrity.
To write what he did out of genuine conviction is perhaps the latest sign that intelligence and education do not always or necessarily intersect.
