New York Review of Books Not Even Pretending Anymore

Over at the Corner, Michael Rubin notes that the New York Review of Books, unlike the New York Times, has not served its readers notice that Peter Galbraith, a longtime contributor, has undisclosed financial interests related to a subject he has written about frequently.

If the TNYRB editors want to get their ethical house in order, they should also take a look at the current issue. It contains a piece by Ed Witten gushing over J Street (gushing is perhaps too modest a word; the piece reads more like a press release written by a J Street summer intern). A writer is free, of course, to gush over J Street if he likes. But Witten serves on J Street’s advisory council. Nowhere is this flagrant conflict of interest disclosed to readers.

  1. Gordon Chang says:

There are no known remedies for some of the problems caused by the Three Gorges Dam, such as silting. Some problems are theoretically capable of fixing but, as a practical matter, will not be. I suspect, for instance, that the water in the resevoir will remain polluted for as long as the dam exists.

This dam, which will continue to cause death and injury to the Chinese people, would never have been built if China had been a democracy. The ultimate remedy is a change in the nature of China’s government.

  2. Ray G says:

I first read of this dam some years ago in a special edition of Scientific American on engineering marvels.

    Hmph. . .

  3. Dan says:

Your post concerns the environmental problems attendant to the dam.

But what I’ve read suggests the dam is in danger of being compromised by erosion and landslides adjacent to the dam. Think of the dam as a front on the verge of being flanked, {the front is the dam, the flanks is the earth along side the dam}.

Such a compromise could result in some horrific burst of water being released, killing God only knows how many.

What have you guys read of that?
