No Way! He’s Going to Say That?

The New York Times reports:

In a conference call today with Congressional staff, the White House communications director, Dan Pfeiffer, said that President Obama would reiterate his commitment to a comprehensive overhaul of the nation’s health care system in his State of the Union address on Wednesday night. Mr. Pfeiffer said that the president will share “additional details” but that the thrust of his message would be that he remains as resolute and committed to revamping the health care system as he was when he gave a speech to a joint session of Congress in early September.

They gotta be kidding, right? This is not a president who likes to admit error, but it seems rather risky to take this approach. What if everyone laughs? Really, Congress has already declared itself ready to move on. Less than a third of the country likes ObamaCare. And Obama lost his filibuster-proof majority on this issue. So he’s going to say he’s just as committed as ever. Even — especially — if he doesn’t mean it, he shouldn’t say it. It makes him look foolish, detached, and weak. If a president is really committed to something he’s not going to get, then he’s simply irrelevant.

Maybe the White House spin got ahead of itself. Maybe Obama is only going to say health care is real important, and we’ll get to it soon. If not, the self-delusion problem is much worse than we imagined.

I know the media has focused on the silly comments on Clinton, but was most disturbing was Pfleger’s widely applauded statement that white people should be forced to give up their 401Ks to pay for the sins of white people before them.

  2. nepat says:

Who knows? But I’m sure it’ll keep the CAPS LOCK crowd in the right-wing blogosphere busy until November and beyond. How many different ways can you say “THE RACIST ANTI-AMERICAN CHURCH HE STAYED IN FOR 20 YEARS!!!,” anyway? Time will soon tell.

  3. Richard F. says:

I’d bet on more to come. Obama has been waltzing with this crowd for over 20 years, most of which coincides with the existence of the internet. Know that residing in somebody’s archives pictures of Obama posing with what can now be fairly termed “the usual suspects”–radical clerics, ACORNers, unrepentant ’60s “activists” as well as video and soundtracks of who-knows-what.

Contrast this with Clinton. Much of his pre-presidency shenanigans predated the ‘net. So much of it relied on witness memories, buried pleadings in lawsuits, and newsprint articles. Given Hillary’s interest in deep-sixing Obama’s prospects, it’s another safe bet that her oppo-research files somehow find their way into the McCain camp and/or the right-wing blogosphere and/or friendly media hands.

Sure, the MSM is crooked for Obama. But nothing illustrates their decline better than the fact that they can’t keep the lid on unwelcome news.

  4. Richard F. says:

Nepat, you miss the point. The meme of “anti-American church” would have far weaker legs had not Obama continued to reinforce it by words and deeds. It was Obama, not the right-wing blogosphere who spent months defending his association his with Trinity. It is Obama, not the right-wing blogosphere who spent even more months defending his “I’ll negotiate without preconditions” stance; now, it is Obama, and not the right-wing blogosphere who is furiously backpeddling. The magically reappearing flag pin is another, albeit small (but just as emblematic) instance of Obama’s inexperience, as was his foolish and costly “cling and frustration” remark before his San Francisco fundraisers.

Thus far, Obama is the author of most of his campaign miseries.

More ways than you can say “Bush’s third term”…

  6. Jonathan Silber says:

I find it a relief to finally have a campaign for President to follow where one candidate, having himself transcended the issues of race, helps the rest of us benighted souls start to transcend those same issues ourselves; so that the experience of the campaign for everybody is one of less and less attention to race, or concern about it. This Obama guy really knows his stuff!

  7. PJ says:

I did hear a rumor repeated on talk radio that there is a videotape of Michelle O ranting at the church as well, and the Reps are going to release it as the October Surprise.

    Could be wishful thinking, though.

BTW Barack talks about his “principles” and how Pfleger and Wright’s conflict with his. What good are his principles if he doesn’t stand by them? Either he went along with evil then or he is forsaking good men now, for the sake of his election. Either way, he is completely un-principled.

  8. technofunk says:

Raw politics aside, the theological implications are astounding. Did he turn his back on his spiritual leaders and community because times got tough and may keep him from becoming president? Early Christian martyrs would like to comment on this, I’m sure. What church will he be going to now? What is it about thier doctrines that are more inline with Obama’s views that Trinity? Either your faith is right, in right case no amount of public scrutinty should sway you, or you are only sitting in the pew to demonstrate something, in which case I image you would bolt at the first discomfort.

As a Traditional Catholic, I find this fair-weather spirituality disgusting.

  9. Jim Rockford says:

I believe that Michelle Obama would get up and rant about Whitey at Trinity. Has anyone seen that video of Pfleger? The Congregation eats that stuff up, and clearly people like Pfleger, and Wright, and no doubt Michelle Obama love the adulation and frenzied response that sort of thing generates.

I’m going to be laughing when Michelle Obama screaming about Whitey hits. That’s probably why Obambi resigned.

  10. Steve Rogers says:

Obamas racist church is no longer an asset for him. Its become a liability. He’s always been an opportunist. Conscience had nothing to do with his decision.

    This isn’t rocket science, people.
