Reason‘s Michael Moynihan has the scoop on an under-reported terrorist attack that occurred yesterday:
Two explosions rocked the downtown shopping district in Stockholm this evening as holiday shoppers crowded the chainstore-clogged area around Drottninggatan. According to early Swedish media reports, a car parked on the busy shopping street exploded at just after 5PM today, wounding two passersby. Two minutes later, say investigators, a second explosion was heard from a nearby street, where police found a bag stuffed with nails and the body, it appears, of the bomber.
According to this report in the tabloid newspaper Expressen, the Swedish security service and TT newswire (the Swedish equivalent to the AP) received a threat “against the Swedish people” ten minutes before the explosions. In a letter and audiotape, the bomber wrote that “Now your children, daughters, and sisters die like our brothers and sisters die.” He continued: “Our actions speak for themselves. As long as you don’t stop your war against Islam, and you degrade the Prophet, and your support for that stupid pig [cartoonist Lars] Vilks.”
Indeed, their actions do speak, repulsively, for themselves.

Mitt is the future of Conservatism and Republicanism, and is the new best face to put forward for our side. Attractive, bright, with good ideas and values, a leader I would happily follow. And did follow, until Mc Cain won. He would have won, and was surging, when the clock ran out.
He has been right on most of the issues we care about, and has the skills to lead the US economy out of the Democrat depression we are entering, produced by Clinton/Dodd/Frank bad ideas and bad legislation at the root of the current worldwide financial collapse.
The front runner for 2012.
If no financing is provided from the government, it’s unlikely the auto industry could enter Chapter 11; they’d need DIP financing in order to do so, and in case you didn’t notice, financing is somewhat hard to come by right now.
Mitt misses the point. There is no reason to keep the Detroit automakers alive except to fund the pensions and prop up the UAW. And maybe Jennifer Granholm’s career. If they vanished tomorrow, their remaining slice of the market would go to US based foreign companies, some of whom would buy whatever is useful out of the failed industries. The only thing left to do is to write an epitaph: US Auto industry: 190x-2008. Killed by Big Government Regulation and the Unions. RIP
Somebody is forgetting about the $3-5k subsidy(per vehicle) that the Japanese Government is kicking back to Honda/Toyota. Can we address that also please?
If the 25B in loans was guarenteed as a precursor to a formal CHapter 11 re-organization, and taken away from the forced investment the dems initially forced on them, that would provide the funds necessary to protect the related employment base, not all of it of course, but a lot of it. You would need to press the states to ammend most of there dealer franchise laws, or pass a federal law that would allow the companies to essentially ignore them all. Without this, not only do the companies disappear but the dealers do too. Especially in small town America.
Will this happen, no, because this means the dems would have to betray the greens and the unions. Not happening. Wave goodbye to the domestic autos, there are not enough votes to ram through what Pelosi wants, the electorate doesn’t like what they are being told the dems want to do. The GOP can lay on their principles at this point, the electorial damage is done. This also means the end of the UAW in its current form, and the end of the democratic electorial advantage in Michigan. It will take one more election cycle, and the UAW will continue goign after public sector workers, but after this happens, what industrial worker group will sign up for a union shop?
When Mitt says new leadership should be brought in to GM from unrelated industries , HE IS 100% WRONG. That is what has destroyed GM. When GM built the finest cars in the wotld (for decades) it was led by people who came up through GM from engineering , manufacturing or auto sales. When they brought in non auto bean counters the company whent to hell. Remember what happened to Oldsmobile under the lady from Ralston Purina? It was all the fad to bring in people with a different perspective. A stupid idea. Would you put a successful ice cream promoter in charge of manufacturing aircraft.?
