Monsters in Our Midst

The elite liberal congressman Anthony Weiner turned his world of digital correspondence into an X-rated predator zone.  With each day’s scandalous revelation, and with his pathological refusal to surrender lawmaker status, he continues to evince the low-rent misogynistic narcissism of The Jersey Shore’s Situation—in more toxic form. Yet, in the words of liberal faceman Alec Baldwin, he is merely “a modern human being.”

Fear not. As the pitiable man of his time endures the attacks of moralists, hypocrites, and other fiends who resent the congressional gym being used as a soft-core production house, the press is hot on the trail of the real monster. Major media institutions, such as the New York Times and the Washington Post, enlisted their readers to comb through Sarah Palin’s emails and report back on anything pounceable. What’s turned up so far? A beautiful letter, never meant for popular consumption, which Palin wrote to her family before the birth of her son Trig. The letter is conceived in the supportive and caring voice of a loving God. Here’s an excerpt:

Every child is created special, with awesome purpose and amazing potential. Children are the most precious and promising ingredient in this mixed up world you live in down there on earth. Trig is no different, except he has one extra chromosome. Doctors call it “Down’s Syndrome”, and Downs kids have challenges, but can bring you much delight and more love than you can ever imagine! Just wait and see, let me prove this, because I only want the best for you!

Some of the rest of the world may not want him, but take comfort in that because the world will not compete for him. Take care of him and he will always be yours!

This is the point in the classic narrative of all witch-hunt stories when the torch-wielding mobs should feel the full weight of self-disgust. But don’t count on it happening today. That kind of ethical self-reflection belongs to the world of morality tales and fables. It belongs to the past. The Palin-hunters, after all, are modern human beings.
