CNN is touting exit polls that said South Carolina voters who cared about a candidate’s religious beliefs overwhelmingly rejected Mitt Romney. They are speculating that this might mean that evangelicals turned down the former Massachusetts governor because of his Mormon faith. Given the polls that have backed up the idea of the prevalence of such prejudice, this isn’t a completely unreasonable conclusion.
However, it must be pointed out that such voters are also most likely to dislike Romney for other reasons. Romney’s reputation as a flip-flopper on social issues is a much bigger problem for him among conservative Christians than Mormonism. We’ve heard much less talk about Romney’s faith this year than we did four years when this appeared to be a major issue, especially in South Carolina.
What this defeat points out for Romney is his inability to generate support from conservative grass roots. That’s a much bigger issue than his religion.
Evangelicals? These are the same people that booed the golden rule. These people are hard core bigots and racist rednecks. Newt was helped by his ex-wife. The only thing that could have helped newt more is if he had married his cousin.

The polling data indicates the real reason here and we can put aside our ant-Evangelical assumptions. The suggestion has been made elsewhere that in the voting booth Evangelicals vote consistently with other demographics–Commentary might rethink its anthropological pith helmet deep-in-the-mysterious-heart-of-Evangelical-Christianity-shtick and get hip to one salient fact about the candidate whose "inevitability" was speculated on here. n nDogs don't want to eat the dog food. n nHe lost Iowa. n nHis New Hampshire win was assisted by a split field. n n 27% of the vote is a loss across all groups. n nRealClear politics: n nAccording to the exit polls, Romney lost among every major category of voter. None of the leads over Gingrich in these groups were particularly large.
