NYT Jerusalem Chief Unsure Whether Israel is an Apartheid State

In an interview with Politico yesterday, the incoming New York Times Jerusalem Bureau Chief Jodi Rudoren said she “would be eager to talk to” Washington Free Beacon reporter Adam Kredo “about anything.” She may be ruing those words this morning:

The New York Times’ incoming Jerusalem bureau chief, Jodi Rudoren, won’t say if she is a Zionist.

“I’m going to punt on that question,” Rudoren, who is Jewish, told the Washington Free Beacon in an interview yesterday. “I’m not really interested in labels about who I am and what I think.” …

Asked if she considers Israel an apartheid state—as critics of the Jewish state so often do—Rudoren declined comment.

“I don’t have an assessment yet,” she said. “I’m not sure I’ll ever answer that question in the way you’ve just framed it.”

Both the Beacon and Politico interviews are worth reading in entirety to get a sense of Rudoren’s mindset going into this position. She’s also a great example of the increasingly archaic journalistic value of placing objectivity above all else, including obvious and undeniable facts.

Are you a Zionist? Do you believe the Jews have a right to self-governance? Do you believe the Jewish state has a right to exist? This is an issue that I would think someone would come to a conclusion about by the time they’re Rudoren’s age. Do you believe Israel is an apartheid state? Again, an issue you would expect her to have some position on.

If Rudoren didn’t want to answer these questions because she felt her response might interfere with her ability to practice journalism, she could have said that. Claiming to have no opinion is just not believable.

Well, par for the course in NY Times appointments…This is why the "grey lady' has lost all credibility in vritually every aspect of politics. If even the actual journalists cannot see the forest for the trees, it is time to scrunch the Ny Times and throw it in the garbage. Imagine asking a reporter in 1940 (or after the Nuremberg laws) -do you think that Hitler is evil? Oh-I have no opinion on that…." What has real journalism come to?

    • Ed Alberts says:

No, journalists were stupid in years past too. Hitler made Time "Man of the Year" and the Holocaust itself (not antisemitism but the Holocaust) started here in the USA with the Eugenics movement, Margaret Sanger and the concept of selective breeding of people. None of this being widely reported then, or now. n nJournalists have always been sheep. Or lemmings….

  2. besht2003 says:

Apple, tree, decline of American middle class mainstream Judaism.

  3. Ironpage says:

The NYT is like the anorexic starlet who keeps getting thinner as does not have a clue as to why.

YO, n nYosef: Gentiles exist only to serve Jews n nBy JONAH MANDEL10/18/2010 05:13 n nAccording to Rabbi, the lives of non-Jews in Israel are safeguarded by divinity, to prevent losses to Jews. nThe sole purpose of non-Jews is to serve Jews, according to Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, the head of Shas’s Council of Torah Sages and a senior Sephardi adjudicator. n n“Goyim were born only to serve us. Without that, they have no place in the world – only to serve the People of Israel,” he said in his weekly Saturday night sermon on the laws regarding the actions non-Jews are permitted to perform on Shabbat. n nAccording to Yosef, the lives of non-Jews in Israel are safeguarded by divinity, to prevent losses to Jews. n n“In Israel, death has no dominion over them… With gentiles, it will be like any person – they need to die, but [God] will give them longevity. Why? Imagine that one’s donkey would die, they’d lose their money. n nThis is his servant… That’s why he gets a long life, to work well for this Jew,” Yosef said. n n“Why are gentiles needed? They will work, they will plow, they will reap. We will sit like an effendi and eat. n nThat is why gentiles were created,” he added. n nYosef’s Saturday night sermons have seen many controversial statements from the 90-year-old rabbi. In August, Yosef caused a diplomatic uproar when he wished a plague upon the Palestinian people and their leaders, a curse he retracted a few weeks later, when he blessed them along with all of Israel’s other peace-seeking neighbors. n nThe basic Talmudic doctrine includes more than a "super-race" complex. It is an "only" race concept. The non-Jew thus ranks as an animal, has no property rights and no legal rights under any code whatever. If lies, bribes or kicks are necessary to get non-Jews under control — that is legitimate. There is only one "sin," and that is anything which will frighten non-Jews and thus make it harder for the Jewish "humans" to get them under control. "Milk the Gentile," is the Talmudic rule, but don't get caught in such a way as to jeopardize Jewish interests. Summarized, Talmudism is the quintesscence of distilled hatred and discrimination — without cause, against non-Jews. n nWHICH PART DIDN'T YOU UNDERSTAND? ISRAEL IS A TALMUDIC, FASCIST, ANTI-CHRIST, ANTI-GOYIM STATE! n nIT MAKES NAZI GERMANY LOOK LIKE A DEMOCRACY!

    • Empress_Trudy says:

Source please. And be sure to include the actual Talmudic section. In Aramaic and Hebrew. Which I'm sure you read. Thanks.

      • Ed Alberts says:

And English too, please. Include the other languages because I can depend on others for spot translations but I don't have the ability to read those other languages… n

  5. steven L says:

Journalism needs to be redefine considering all the means of communication and gathering information available today. The left leaning NYT automatically set Jodi to the left of the mid-line despite the claim from the NYT that NYT is the middle! Let see what criteria she will use and then use the same criteria to all the other democratic countries of the world and then to all the non-democratic countries of the world which are the vast majority. nThat is the only way to judge.

  6. Aaron Lasker says:

"She’s also a great example of the increasingly archaic journalistic value of placing objectivity above all else, including obvious and undeniable facts." n nThis really captures the arbitrariness of the way journalists adhere to being objective. Of course, objectivity is fact driven.

  7. tzvimoshecooper says:

in israel, journalists need the favor of islamo-terrorists such as belong to Hamas and Hizbullah. without that favor, they could be shot or, as with Bonner, dismissed (even his extreme-left Israel-bashing subjective reporting was seen as too pro-Israel).

  8. Israeli100 says:

Give the woman a break. Are you a Jewish Supremacist (Zionist)? No Comment. Is Israel the Apartheid State that everyone knows it is? No comment. "No", and "Yes" would have gotten her in trouble so she passed. There's no disputing the fact that it's bad to be called a Zionist today, nor that Israel is a murderously racist State.

    • brooklynroads says:

Don't know where iIsraeli100 lives, but perhaps a relocation to sunny Syria or Iridentist Iran, or any of a slew of countries that he might prefer to Israel, is in order. He can change names to Iran100 and live happily ever after.

      • Cynic says:

Maybe he gets his small change from Media Matters?
Wouldn’t put it past Spooky dude paying to disrupt comments on conservative sites.
        Frontpage also has its trolls.

    • gdchandler says:

Well, you are wrong. Israel is not a murderously racist state. For examples of murderous states we only have to look as far as one of its neighbors, Syria. Amazingly enough, the UN Human Rights Commission has discovered there is something wrong in Syria and the UN Secretary General thinks it may have committed crimes against humanity. n nIs it bad to be called a Zionist today? If you are an arab, certainly. If you are a Zionist, no, its something to be proud of. If Michelle Obama can at last be proud of the USA why can't Israelis be proud of their country?

    • besht2003 says:

btw those democratic non-racist Islamic states are doing just fine in that peace, love and understanding thing aren't they? duck! incoming!!!!!! what a maroon.

    • vandag1 says:

I'd like to give her a break (and you as well) – in the neck. Many, many ,many years ago I use to subscribe to that anti-Semitic rag. I want my money back, with interest.

  9. MGray38 says:

Who cares what this woman thinks. The Times has a mantra, and she reflects it. Get used to it. The Times lost $40 million in 2011. I'm sure Carlos Slim who saved the Times from BK is just lovin' it. The Times is in a death spiral now selling off assets to stay afloat. Be patient. In the meantime, Ignore her, Shun her, Spit on her in the street. She can hang out with her friends from Mondoweis.

  10. Ed Alberts says:

Ann Rand is the LIBERARIAN's hero, not that of the Libertarian Paleo Conservatives which is probably what I am. Read Ms. Glick's latest column — townhall.com has it — she does a much better job than I ever could of linking the eugenics movement, the Holocaust, and antisemitism.
