Obama Drops His Name Into the Other Presidential Biographies

Many of President Obama’s fervent devotees are young enough not to have much memory of the political world before the arrival of The One. Coincidentally, Obama himself feels the same way—and the White House’s official website reflects that.

The Heritage Foundation’s Rory Cooper tweeted that Obama had casually dropped his own name into Ronald Reagan’s official biography on www.whitehouse.gov, claiming credit for taking up the mantle of Reagan’s tax reform advocacy with his “Buffett Rule” gimmick. My first thought was, he must be joking. But he wasn’t—it turns out Obama has added bullet points bragging about his own accomplishments to the biographical sketches of every single U.S. president since Calvin Coolidge (except, for some reason, Gerald Ford). Here are a few examples:

  • On Feb. 22, 1924 Calvin Coolidge became the first president to make a public radio address to the American people. President Coolidge later helped create the Federal Radio Commission, which has now evolved to become the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). President Obama became the first president to hold virtual gatherings and town halls using Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, etc.
  • In a 1946 letter to the National Urban League, President Truman wrote that the government has “an obligation to see that the civil rights of every citizen are fully and equally protected.” He ended racial segregation in civil service and the armed forces in 1948. Today the Obama administration continues to strive toward upholding the civil rights of its citizens, repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, allowing people of all sexual orientations to serve openly in our armed forces.
  • President Lyndon Johnson signed Medicare signed (sic) into law in 1965—providing millions of elderly healthcare stability. President Obama’s historic health care reform law, the Affordable Care Act, strengthens Medicare, offers eligible seniors a range of preventive services with no cost-sharing, and provides discounts on drugs when in the coverage gap known as the “donut hole.”
  • In a June 28, 1985 speech Reagan called for a fairer tax code, one where a multi-millionaire did not have a lower tax rate than his secretary. Today, President Obama is calling for the same with the Buffett Rule.

I imagine Bill Clinton will be especially receptive to Obama’s habit of shoehorning himself into the limelight previously occupied by others. As you can see, the bullet points make clear that while each president has done something historic or notable, Obama is carrying forward every one of those accomplishments since Coolidge. No wonder he always seems so proud of himself.

  1. Shortest_Way says:

Reminds me of how the Korean Central New Agency treats Kim Jong IL etc.

  2. this is super childish.

  3. gigireceda says:

Ok. So, how did this happen and how can these bullet points be removed,if at all ?! I keep saying, BHO has the two most dangerous personality flaws: arrogance and narcissism.

  4. When your only achievement is miscounting actual states and pronouncing a simple common military word like corpsman twice in the same speech without correcting yourself, it's pretty clear you are an affirmative action puppet for someone with their hand up your ass.

    • @klberney says:

Yeah, amazing how Bin Laden's head just miraculously exploded on its own last year. That was incredibly lucky.

      • Rich Shepard says:

Yep, you are right, your hero, heroically, repelled out of a helicopter in full military gear, and at great risk to himself fought his way into Bin Laden's compound and off'ed him all by himself. n nIt was incredibly fortunate that we'd gotten the information that ultimately led to Bin Laden before they Obama and other's like him pressured GWB into shutting down the stressful interrogation techniques for a few high value targets. Nothing like getting the benefits of the hard work of others and hedging your bets and not f***ing up in letting a general give the order. n nYep, he did it by himself. Only he could have personally got Bin Laden.

      • falling says:

Lucky? No the Navy Seals and other military personnel who were involved in taking out Bin Laden had worked many hard long days and nightsfor months on end, earning their specialized training. Obama learned to do his part in the third grade….well the rest of us did, I'm not sure how old they are before they learn to sign their name over there in Indonesia…and Obama is a bit slow, so it could have been forth grade I guess!

  5. JohnnyC says:

Since he has no accomplishments of his own worthy of listing, he is forced to ride the coat tails of others. And gigireceda is absolutely right. But they are more flaws of character than of personality!

    • Maybe he's just following some awesome role models–Reagan and the others–and simply pointing it out to us. He got bin Laden, added jobs, killed some pirates, and passed healthcare. I feel safer and more confident with this competent black man in the oval office–so much more than the incurious white guy who got us into this mess. I guess i'm a little out of touch with the typical commentary fan, whom I believed to be more intellectual and thoughtful than this. Aren't us jews supposed to be more cerebral and educated. Not seeing it here. n n

  6. romanticpoet says:

nObama's Narcissism is showing…… n nIs Obama inching his way to Malignant Narcissism? When he loses in November; will his wrath lash out at those around him?

  7. @LOrion says:

So What it is HIS page not the Whitehouse buildings page!! nGo him! And I am sure others actually did it!

    • Shat Nickle says:

r u really that dumb – it is the office of the White House which is NOT Obummer. he just happens to be squatting there now but it is the peoples house and it is the peoples page. Please crawl under a rock – again.

    • Support a "loser". Be a LOSER

    • Um, no. It is NOT his page. It is the OFFICIAL White House website. The biographies were the official biographies of Presidents who preceded Obama. It's a BIOGRAPHY. Perhaps I should define the word for you: "An account of someone's life" Obama wasn't even ALIVE when Coolidge was President – so WHY is his name even associated with Coolidge's biography?!? Duh – because he's a pathological narcissist who will do anything to make it 'all about HIM'. (The same goes for the other Presidents whose biographies were defaced by Obama.) Disgusting and deplorable actions from a man who is supposed to be acting with dignity and decorum in the highest office in the land!

  8. Washington Nearsider says:

I wish I could say I was surprised. As it is, I'm just disgusted.

  9. BDZ says:

    This is disgusting.

  10. Just when you think the Scum Obama Administration can't get any lower, they lower the floor… unreal… but frankly, not surprising.

  11. @rbeccah says:

Narcissism is one thing, but this President is pathological.

    • heartlander says:

What makes it so galling is that every single one of those statements he inserted is a falsehood. For instance, his Obamacare is actually designed to BANKRUPT Medicare TWELVE YEARS FROM NOW. His "death panels" will cut those seniors loose and essentially tell them to go home and off themselves and get out of the way. n nIt's chilling to realize that this behavior — both the lying and the self-glorification — is characteristic of every communist tyrant. Think Mao Tse-Tung.

  12. firstpoppa says:

Michelle said it all, 'We should be GRATEFUL that Barry is our president!' n nHahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Red_Ruffansore says:

In a strange way I am, after preaching the dangers of liberal stupidity to family and friends for over 20 years, it's nice to see they finally got what they have been praying for and hurt themselves so badly electing this puppet head as President. I am going to throroughly enjoy watching him get chewed to shreds in November and rubbing all my family and friends noses in it.

    • hahahahaqhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah n nI actually am grateful to have a smart honest prez.

  13. Patrick says:

You missed this one,r nr nr nPresident John F. Kennedy famously suggested the American people: u201cAsk what you can do for your country.u201d In 1961, the Peace Corps was created, facilitating service among citizens working toward peace in developing countries. In 2011, President Obama celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corpsu00a0with a Presidential Proclamation.r nr nthis guy is a joke.

    • i don't get it….why is this a problem for you? Why are you so irritated by this? Peace Corps a bad thing now because the black guy celebrates it?

      • I'll explain it for you. He is inserting himself into the biographies of presidents that have very little to do with him. He is "piggybacking" (not a word I know) off the accomplishments of others. n nAlso, you do yourself a disservice by bringing race into the discussion. No one cares that the is black. By you insinuating that the OP is upset because Obama is black, you are derailing the conversation and stifling discussion. By playing the race card, you are showing off your racism.

      • How does that belong in JFK's bio??? Put it in Obama's bio when it goes up on the web as a former president. Presidential bios are reserved for those presidents – not for their successors! That is what is wrong with it!

      • Obviously Ayantika Knott can't be bothered to actually read the article and ensuing comments from readers on the subject at hand.

      • Dan says:

        Who siad anything about black?

    • Maybe he's just following some awesome role models–Reagan and the others–and simply pointing it out to us. He got bin Laden

    • MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENT, that one…GOD! Why wasn't that day declared a National, NO, a WORLD Holiday?!? Think about it…there could be a day off, parades, even Best Buy sales weekends for "World Celebrates Obama's Proclamation of Kennedy's Peace Corps Day"…No, better make that "World Celebrates Obama's Proclamation of Kennedy's, But Obama WOULD Have Created It, Peace Corps Day"…

  14. ss396 says:

In the 2008 version of the White House's Presidential biographies, there are other incidents of policy continuations – but only for Vice Presidents who succeeded in office: n – “Van Buren's remedy–continuing Jackson's deflationary policies–only deepened and prolonged the depression.” n – “In June 1945 Truman witnessed the signing of the charter of the United Nations, hopefully established to preserve peace. Thus far, he had followed his predecessor's policies, but he soon developed his own.” n – “First he [Johnson] obtained enactment of the measures President Kennedy had been urging at the time of his death–a new civil rights bill and a tax cut.” n nSometimes, though, it went the other way: n- “Thus the sudden accession of Fillmore to the Presidency in July 1850 brought an abrupt political shift in the administration. Taylor's Cabinet resigned” n nAnd a sop to the future: n- “At the end of his administration [Benjamin] Harrison submitted to the Senate a treaty to annex Hawaii; to his disappointment, President Cleveland later withdrew it.” n nNot that past President's didn't continue or develop programs from their predecessors. Indeed, many of them served other Presidents in appointed positions. But the biographic records during their presidencies are kept as biographies of that presidency, not paeans to their legacies for some future suck-up to exploit. n nOh, and they are all about a page long – I wonder how lengthy Obama's will be when he leaves office…?

  15. gigireceda says:

Romney should stay above the fray, but RNC should really get ahold of this and all the comments on Twitchy. They'll have BHO the laughingstock in no time!!

    • jeffythequick says:

Calling him a laughingstock is like adding a cup of water to the ocean and calling it wet. n nWe're already there!

  16. david_benton says:

According to the WH website: "The Presidential biographies on WhiteHouse.gov are from “The Presidents of the United States of America,” by Michael Beschloss and Hugh Sidey. Copyright 2009 by the White House Historical Association.". nWon't Micheal and Hugh be pleased with the additions that give some contemporary relevance to their rather pedestrian bio-sketches? n

  17. Monty Miller says:

And God said, "Let there be light. And, there was light." Today, President Obama carries on God's magnificent work with the Cap & Trade Energy Plan currently being stalled by Republicans in the House.

  18. thinkingdownstream says:

I heard that Obama's going to have his head carved into Mount Rushmore in place of the other four presidents already there. n nThat's only a semi-joke. Because after this utterly childish, petty action of crashing and denigrating other president's biographies, it would not surprise me in the least if Obama were to announce that his face will replace those presidents already on Mt. Rushmore.

  19. ID says:

Defacing the webpages of other Presidents. Very thuggish and classic Obama.

  20. manofaiki says:

My God, just when you think you've figured out just how big this incompetent empty suit's ego is, he goes and does something like this and surprises you and you are FORCED to admit it's even bigger than you thought it was!

  21. Shaun Baker says:

If only the "Where's Waldo" books were this easy. He's EVERYWHERE!

  22. Paul B. says:

    The man is a disgrace.

  23. radiopatriot says:

We attribute this action to Obama himself. But I believe it is those who surround him, who prop him up, who "dress the Emperor" in his invisible clothes every day. Obama is clever, but not in control. He's their "agent", the guy the global power players sent in to flip the switches that the Leftist functionaries and regulators have been preparing for decades. To attribute all this to Obama gives him more credit than is his due. @Stadium Hopper put it perfectly: "When your only achievement is miscounting actual states and pronouncing a simple common military word like corpsman twice in the same speech without correcting yourself, it's pretty clear you are an affirmative action puppet for someone with their hand up your ass. " n nMichelle is there to make sure he doesn't screw up. Valerie Jarrett is there to make sure he carries out what he's ordered to do. Remember, Obama goes nowhere without his Blackberry… orders from headquarters. n nAnd if in this upcoming election Obama can't get the job done, they'll eliminate him (and turn him into a "martyr") and then blame the conservatives for doing the deed, giving these globalists perfect cover to clamp down on all of us. They've got it all figured out. n nso… what do we do about it??? n n

    • Conspiricy therioes aside (along with my spelling and grammar) – you've got it figured out! Obama is just one human being on a planet with billions of others and as far as the "globalists go, they too are just individuals no more capable of carrying out some giant interconnected coo then it is likely that Obama has the time (or the smarts himself) to sit at his desk and update the bios in question.____As for waht it is that "we" can do about it, well that answer is simple. Relax, get out and vote and then – This is the important part – support that vote with your ongoing service. Volunteer for a candidate whose mantra you can get behind and be an influence in the democratic process. Freedom is earned and the job of maintaining it never ends. Be vigilante. Be conservative. And carry that, yourself, with a conservative eye forward!

  31. Watch for it. If/when the Republicans win the WH and start cleaning up the mess, including removing this narcissistic dreck, Democrats will scream that the Republicans are scouring Obama from the record. "It's a purge!" they will say, and a rewriting of history. n nWhen the Democrats smell a loss coming, they will do all they can to "poison the well", creating pitfalls for the Republicans to stumble into, thereby giving the Dems material for vocal criticism (and great copy, by the way, for the MSM). n nWe've seen it in the past: The Clinton Administration passed some really insane environmental laws in their last days in office, and then jumped all over the Republicans when they started to undo the damage. n nWatch for it! PsyWar is alive and well in the Democrat party.

The White House Historical Society and Michael Beschloss and Hugh Sidney have copyright authority as well as acknowledged territorial rights and interests in the content and maintenance of that page. It is worse than impolitic to trample those interests in a short sighted political campaign. Does the Obama staff really want to flip off the Historical Society like this? How could the Democratic Party machine really let the Obama staff continue to make such unforced errors? Social and diplomatic protocol standards should never have been permitted to fail and it is a measure of how the Obamas are viewed within the party that they let them continue in this vein.

  47. John Smith says:

  50. It seems only a matter of time before the President finds himself captured by his own reflection in the mirror, a la Narcissus

  51. I suppose it's all how you look at it. Going to the biographies and reading them myself, I notice that his comments could be viewed as a salute to past presidents and what they worked for. He doesn't take credit for what they did. He acknowledges the importance of what they've done, and emphasizes his desire to continue in the footsteps of wise men who came before him. Criticism of this is rather petty.

    • coltakashi says:

Obama is aspiring to be Zelig, putting himself into the center of other leaders' historical events, because he cannot claim enough of his own. He owns a Nobel Peace Prize for–what?–approving the killing of Osama bin Laden? His constant efforts to revive his association with that singular event will lead future school children to constantly confuse Osama bin Laden with Barack Hussein Obama and Saddam Hussein.

    • You are wrong. He is not saluting other presidents…he is superimposing himself ontheir past glory. It's like your mom's new husband cutting and pasting himself into your childhood photos and attemting to insert himself into your memories…its just WRONG. n

  52. the President is simply stating the achievements of his predecessors and highlighting his efforts to sustain those achievements. It makes sense for the current President to relate recurring themes to his current administration. That's what matters. Now. Just because Republican sensationalists need things to say other than "he's a muslim" or "he's a socialist" or "he's unamerican," Commentary (and the Heritage Foundation, unsurprisingly) decides to drum up a non-issue from the website. You guys should start reporting real news or just shut down. Otherwise you're simply polluting people's minds and media.

    • kentatwater says:

Yes, there is the axiom "a best defense is a good offense," but when the act is indefensible, the attempt just looks pathetic. There is no hyperbole in this article, just a cataloging of the biographical corruption committed by one who is clearly a narcissist. n nHe can't run on his record, so he has to stand on the shoulders of those who came before him. n nActually, it's more like he's skipping from shoulder to shoulder. I'll say it again: pathetic.

    • darbog1975 says:

Kind of irritating to have someone take credit for something they did not do. Such is the case with this angry monkey you call your president. 86. playrighter says:

While there's a question as to why Ford doesn't have an Obama reference (yet), none of the presidents pre-Coolidge have the "Did You Know" feature at the bottom where Obama inserts himself. n nOdds are pretty good that unless these entries are scrubbed (screenshots, anyone), there's a good chance the other presidents will also get their Obama links. How could he pass up another opportunity to attach himself to Abraham Lincoln, FDR, and others?

  87. Beachsnake says:

Hey, at least the other Presidents knew how many states there were in the Union when they took office! Spare me, Obummer, you don't know enough about the states or the Constitution to occupy the leadership position of this country. You and your wife are both an embarrassment to the country. To be continued……………….

  88. aliakram says:

Wow, all of you should be ashamed of yourselves for consuming this biased media and not checking the facts for yourselves. There is barely anything changed, and all of it is at the end of the pages in Did You Know? sections. They are not part of the actual biography, and saying the additions are on all the pages is a lie.

  89. Jack_Kennedy says:

the PUNK known as obama just never ceases to amaze me………………….it is very depressing for America

  90. what an arrogant POS. Every day I see something else to make me dispise this SOB

  91. ursine says:

If this is happening now, one must wonder how far this narcissistic liar may take it if he indeed has a chance to be "more flexible" after the 2012 elections. n n>>> GET OBOZO OUT OF WHITE HOUSE! <<<

  92. The Narcissist-in-Chief marking his territory

  93. J.M. Midnite says:

Misleading as per usual, actually look at the pages before buying this. As was earlier pointed out there are additional "Did You Know" sections under the biographies which allow you to put past and present accomplishments in perspective. This biographies are typically rather ignored, so this appears to have been a good idea as at least Conservative Staffers are being made to read them all now. And where was the Heritage Foundation when the Bush administration actually rewrote the Biographies, downplaying Democratic achievements and actually listing Ronald Reagan as "Ushering in a Golden Age.."

  94. Attention ladies and gentlemen and you racist ! You have finally lived to see history being made in America .Something that racist never thought would happen. However it did and thank god for America during my life time . I'm proud to say I've lived through One of the most difficult times in American history and seen an African American /Irish American [BARACK OBAMA ]become the greatest American hero America has ever seen before. This president BARACK OBAMA ]will go on and continually make great strides regardless of the knuckleheads and racist that unfortunately continually exist . I do expect the knuckleheads replies , but that's OK The losers are just looking for attention they wouldn't get normally.

  95. pookieamos says:

This is simply disgusting ! Is there nothing this man won' t do to lift himself ? This guy is an egomaniacle narcissistic loser . We gotta get this America Idol ,media made propagandist out of the people's White House , NOW ! It seems this guy sinks to a new low every single day ! ENOUGH

  96. @HoldenDCat says:

This could be a well – intentioned effort to get POTUS's younger supporters to pay attention to history, but then, I don't expect the ideologues at Commentary to see it that way. n nThen, there's this: "No wonder (Obama) always seems so proud of himself." n nWhy not just call him "uppity," Mr. Mandel? I know you're itching to.

  97. AeternusAnima says:

Really? Did anyone who is sitting here whining about our President even bother to check the authors facts? None of these biographies have these statements within the text. Only at the end of the page at the very bottom is there a "Did you Know?" bubble that provides these bullets that relates to that presidents administration to the current one. Not Claiming credit for what that president did. Seems like the majority of members on this site would rather whine and complain than actually do the 5 minute check to see what really is there. Ignorance is bliss.

  98. Eve Horowitz says:

This is silly. It's done with each president to show the historical context. Judge president Obama on his many accomplishments such as providing health care, capturing OBL, etc.. I am proud that he is our president and will actively campaign for him to serve another term.

  99. Those that know me know I’ve no particular love [understatement of the year] for O, but I looked [for the 3rd time] and cannot find any revisions, nor even mention of the O in any presidential bio but his own. Can anyone show me where these revisions are?

  100. itsspideyman says:

The need for the Obama administration, whether the direct order of the president, or from some underling, to interject themselves into the bios of other presidents speaks to a desperate need to be considered relevant. Even if not Obama, it speaks to a pervasive inferiority complex that permeates the Oval Office.

  101. itsspideyman says:

Did President Bush feel the need to include mention of himself in the bios of other presidents? The Administration's desire to do this speaks to an inferiority complex that permeates the Oval Office, a need for relevance. With no accomplishments to run on (why isn't he talking about passing healthcare at every stop?), adding yourself to other presidential bios seems very small-minded. n

  102. EightiesSupport says:

Historically it's a novel problem, but there is an argument to be made that the whitehouse.gov www site is not meant to be a subsidized campaign blog. While cleansing it of politicized wording may be practically impossible, any POTUS who uses it for mere grandstanding and publicity, Ingsoc-style, is clearly violating the American self-conceit of permanent institutions of the republic administered by transitory citizen officials. n nBut probably now every .gov site is this bad.

  103. php basics says:

Magnificent web site. Plenty of useful info here. I am sending it to some buddies ans also sharing in delicious. And certainly, thanks on your sweat!

  104. Brian Es says:

The "Did you know?"…IS the bullets added to mention Obama.. n nDo you know what a bullet is in typography?..apparently not. n nNo matter how you gloss it up its petty and shameful. So don't bother.

  105. I've flunked better brains than you out of weed-out calculus. Watch your mouth, bugwit. Drinking the Kool-Aid isn't an intellectual credential.

  106. @dpczech says:

Did You Know? There is nothing of any substance on President Obama's bio. Exactly why the White House is piggy backing on previous Presidents. They have accomplishments where BO has none.

  107. Bert says:

Americans are more obese today than ever before. Michele and Barack are both reported to pig out on junk food when they think no one is watching. Their words do not match their deeds but what else is new?

  108. J.M. Midnite says:

Oooh, a Jim Jones reference, you must be intelligent… Tell me, how well has that Quiz Bowl calculus ability served you in Politics against the "Bugwits..?" At least you got to brag on the one Rain Man style ability you do have as "Grasping the Obvious" apparently Failed…
