“Hardball” Host Can’t Answer the Question

If you’d like to see what happens when an arrogant, thin-skinned journalist is asked a legitimate question about a silly (but revealing) comment he once made, you can’t do much better than viewing this clip of MSNBC’s Chris Matthews.

C-SPAN’s Steve Scully—one of the most objective and decent journalists in America today—asked Matthews if he still felt toward Barack Obama today the same “thrill” that went up his leg in 2008.

The response by Matthews is filled with bitterness and self-righteousness. “If you had done your reporting over at C-SPAN, you would have checked that I said the exact same thing in 2004 after I heard his address up here in Boston,”” according to Matthews. “I want to help you with your reporting,” Matthews says later. And it gets worse from there, with Matthews—who for some inexplicable reason characterizes his work as “reporting”—constantly trying to put down Scully, including calling him a “jackass.” Matthews is enraged because Scully asked Matthews a question Matthews faces from “every horse’s ass right winger I bump into.”

How dare one journalist read an accurate quote from another and ask if he still holds those same views.

The irony abounds. Chris Matthews hosts a show called “Hardball”—yet when asked about his previous statement, he whines and complains as if the question itself is illegitimate. And unlike Matthews, Scully is respectful to his guests and doesn’t constantly interrupt them.

Of all the people I have met in the political class over the decades, those with the thinnest skins tend to be journalists. They are antagonistic toward politicians and revel in their effort to “afflict the comfortable.” Yet when the tables are turned in even the most gentle of ways, many of them (though certainly not all of them) become petty, small-minded, and ad hominem in their response. It’s no wonder the American public holds journalists in such low esteem.

At least he didn't call him a 'racist'. That's usually Al Sharpton's job.

LOL! n nChrissy Tingles will never be forgotten for that comment….. n

What makes this all the worst, and Peter's comments are excellent, is that the question was asked as a yes or no answer. If Mr. Mathews still holds Mr. Obama in the same regard, he could have simply said "yes." If not, then "no" would suffice. n nThere was no reason to berate Mr. Scully other than for Mr. Mathews to insult the host and to show that he himself cannot accept having to respond to what is a simple, yet revealing, question. n nOne of the better aspects of the Internet and particularly websites, is that people's quotes and thoughts are forever recoverable and that is particularly true of those who make a living telling the rest of us what they think. Mr. Mathews will have to live with what he said, others are right to question him on it, and the rest of us can see just how petty some news people are.

Chris Matthews like the rest of M.S.N.B.C.has been indoctrinated with hatred against all Republicans and Conservatives. It is so obvious that M.S.N.B.C. takes their orders on what to say and do from Obama and the Democratic party.Just watching Matthews,Schultz,O'Donnell,Bashir,Wagner,Maddow and the rest and you will see how sick mentally and emotionally disturbed they are.M.S.N.B.C.is a disgrace to all real journalists.

Chris Mathews is an embarrassment to the journalistic profession. This brainless motormouth is nothing but a tool of the Obama administration and is now trying to orchestrate their campaign for them. He has the nerve to insult Michelle Bachmann about her intelligence and then reveals his blatant stupidity of “Jeopardy.” He’s one of the reasons why I never watch PMSNBC. The fact is, Michelle Bachmann is far more intelligent that this cretin.

Most Hollywood movie celebrities are also thin-skinned leftists who become nasty when cross-questioned–or asked any kind of challenging question, really. It harshes their high. n nMatthews could have had a sense of humor. He could have said, yes I still like Mr. Obama, warts and all. He could have said, well, the honeymoon is over (a good laugh line). n nBut no, he had to come across as a petulant brat. Come to think of it, he pretty much represents the norm today in American society–spoiled, entitled, impatient brats who never had to work hard or postpone pleasure. n nI'm struggling to teach my 7-year-old to wait until after supper and after cleanup and after practicing violin before she can have a treat. In another year or two, she'll have more maturity than Matthews and most of his ilk! Or at least, I would hope and expect so, else I'll have failed as a father!

MSNBC is an embarrassment to the USA! nThey are far left and selfish.

  8. SidBachrach says:

Chris Matthews showed himself to be a mean, vainglorious, thin skinned man. He can't allow a reporter even from a mainstream network like CSpan ask him a question he doesn't like. Rather than answer the question, he just spews insults. At the end, he engages in some nasty gay bashing but the media friends of his in the MSM will never call him out for his gay bashing. Media Matters will be silent, as that organization searches only for prejudice from conservatives. Nothing that Rush Limbaugh or Don Imus ever said approached the nastiness of Matthews' gay bashing. He used code words but winked and leered to telegraph to the audience that he was ridiculing gay people. No wonder his ratings are below those of test patterns.

  9. m0derateGuy says:

Chris Matthews is a "journalist" ho does "reporting"??? That would be truly earth-shattering news to anyone who has spent more than 5 seconds in front of TV with MSNBC channel on.

  10. Pete Madsen says:

Matthews may as well get comfortable with the fact that he will for the rest of his public life be identified with his comment about the thrill that went up his leg on hearing 0bama speak. A lot of people in the United States, in fact, know little else about him.

  11. joeo23 says:

It makes on pine for Tim Russert. While Liberal in outlook he had worked to get to his position and was able to state his views without vitriol or condescension. I think that came as much from working on a garbage truck and working on Senator Moynihan’s’ staff.

  12. christian says:

Of course, "liberal" Matthews could have been asked about his orgasmic praise of George Bush's flight deck propaganda — which every conservative critic of Matthews IGNORES: n nMATTHEWS: We're proud of our president. Americans love having a guy as president, a guy who has a little swagger, who's physical, who's not a complicated guy like [former President Bill] Clinton or even like [former Democratic presidential candidates Michael] Dukakis or [Walter] Mondale, all those guys, [George] McGovern. They want a guy who's president. Women like a guy who's president. Check it out. The women like this war. I think we like having a hero as our president. It's simple. We're not like the Brits. We don't want an indoor prime minister type, or the Danes or the Dutch or the Italians, or a [Russian Federation President Vladimir] Putin. Can you imagine Putin getting elected here? We want a guy as president. n n n
