It’s a tell-tale sign of the difficult situation he faces that President Obama is increasingly invoking his work ethic as a reason to re-elect him.
“I suspect that most people … would acknowledge that I’ve tried real hard, and we just haven’t gotten the kind of willingness on the part of Republicans to engage on a whole range of issues that I wish had happened,” Obama told WLWT-TV during a campaign swing through Ohio last Thursday.
Set aside the fact that Obama’s effort at bipartisanship has fallen massively short of what he promised. Even if Obama has tried as hard as he wants us to believe, it’s not a measure of strength when the president of the United States begins making plaintive pleas. It’s the latest excuse for a man who seems to have an endless supply of them.
Obama’s campaign themes are coming into sharper focus. The objective conditions in the country are dismal. The president has shown us time and again that he’s in over his head. But he’s tried real hard. That and $4.85 will get you a venti cappuccino at a New York City Starbucks.

Great moments in presidential leadership: n nLincoln: "As our case is new, we must think anew…" n nFDR: "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.." n nObama: "It's not my fault…." n nHe can be a really cynical small man on occasion. And the occasions are increasing. n nSo is the smallness.
The reality is that, insofar as the actual work of governance required of a CEO is concerned, Barack Obama is perhaps the flat-out laziest president the country has seen since Warren G. Harding. On the other hand, he has an inexhaustible store of git-up-'n'-go when it comes to the perks of the office, as well as for campaigning. The abundant opportunities for combining the two activities that he may arrange for himself on the public's dime, as for example, attending a Hollywood fundraiser or vacationing on the Vineyard with the chatterati or golfing at Burning Tree with celebrity sycophants, is what truly inspires this devoted navel-gazer and keeps him going.
My feeling is that he is an accomplished Alinskyite propagandist and he is playing that role very well. What appears to conservatives – immune from that propaganda – is an incompetent CEO. But, given that he is still ahead, given the obvious incompetence we conservatives see, shows that his propaganda in the broader spectrum of American politics is working, is very dangerous and needs to be neutralized.
Working hard is subjective and I'm sure Obama is just plain tuckered out; 100 rounds of golf, 160+ campaign stops, a vacation every 3 months. Whew I feel bad for him, I really, really feel bad for him. Here's a thought Obama, how about we retire you in January so you can get some rest.
I have been dismissive of Obama campaign schemes before; but this time he might've hit upon something. This 'I really AM as pathetic as I think you feel' could be a winner with all too many people.
