The Egyptian government is looking to scrap parts of its peace treaty with Israel, according to an advisor to President Morsi, claiming a “strategic and security need.” As Jonathan noted yesterday, Morsi has let the Sinai disintegrate into lawlessness, paving the way for incidents like last week’s terrorist attack on Israel. Now Morsi advisors appear to be using the lack of security in the Sinai as a justification for amending the treaty:
In comments published in the online Dostor newspaper, one of Egypt’s independent dailies, a Morsi adviser, Mohammed Seif el-Dawla, was quoted as saying he will soon give the president a proposal on amending the treaty between Egypt and Israel.
El-Dawla provided no details of the proposal, which he said would be drawn up by a panel of consultants. Amending the treaty, he said, was ‘‘a popular demand and a strategic and security need.’’
The Egyptian government’s failure to secure the Sinai puts Israel in a tricky position regarding the peace treaty, and it appears that’s the intention. Egypt will point to each cross-border attack on Israel as a reason for why it needs to militarize the area. Meanwhile, efforts by Israel to fight back against the attacks will be criticized by Egypt as a violation of the treaty.
It’s yet another reason why the U.S. should put stipulations on Egypt’s foreign aid, with one of these demands being heightened border security. The aid has given us visibility into the government and the military, which is helpful, but why not get some more political leverage out of it? There’s no point in having leverage if we don’t use it.

If things keep going the way they are going, pretty soon retaking the Sinai will be ‘‘a popular demand and a strategic and security need’’ for Israel. n nFunny how that works . . .
And the Egyptians can pay Israel for the cost of having demolished Taba. You would think that after Camp David people would have seen that Land for Peace means Land For Empty Promises, or at best Land for a Cold Truce But For Only So Long as Convenient for the Arab State.
Payroll taxes will rise after Morsi the Mufti gets his Jizya (extortion money) from Washington. He will not meet Obama before election, because his threat will anger voters. But the muti- billion dollar first installment will be on the way after he phones the Oval Office. Eight million Egyptian Christians are being held hostage, Morsi the Mufti will protect them as long as the Jizya is paid. The US is being JIZZED by Cairo`s main JIZZER.
The logical response by Israel is to say they need to move the border southward, at least temporarily, until Egypt can control the Sinai without more troops. And if they still can't control the border without more troops, then Israel should move the border even further south, and so on, until Israel is facing the Suez Canal.
Fine. Any attack on Israel from Sinai is an attack by Egypt. The response will be in kind, militarily and diplomatically. Furthermore it's time to pull up all connections between Gaza and Israel including people, traffic, fuel, electricity, everything. And then open the sea lanes to Gaza tell them there will be zero interactions at any level with Israel and toss it back to Egypt from whence it came. Then declare that either Gaza is an independent nation or it's part of Egypt and any attack on Israel from Gaza will be met in kind or in kind on Egypt if they are assisting them. n nCamp David is dead. Time to face facts.
