To follow up on my previous item on how much trouble Republicans face with Latino (and other minority) voters, take a look at the results of the Fox News exit polls.
They show that 11 percent of voters were Latinos and that they went for President Obama by margins varying from 65 percent (those 65 years old and up) to 74 percent (18- to 29-year-olds). The fact that the youngest group–which made up 4 percent of the total electorate–is the most Democratic is especially alarming because of what it says about the future.
It should also be noted that respondents who were neither white nor African-American nor Latino made up 5 percent of the electorate. They, too, went for Obama overwhelmingly by 67 percent to 31 percent. This suggests that Asian-Americans, who like Latinos ought to be a natural Republican constituency, are strongly trending the other way.
Respondents were then asked what should happen to most illegal immigrants working in the U.S.–should they be offered a chance to apply for legal status or deported? Sixty-five percent of respondents said they should be offered a chance to apply for legal status–what Republican politicians normally characterize as an “amnesty for illegal aliens.” Only 28 percent said that they should be deported. This suggests that Republicans’ anti-immigration views hurt them not only with Latinos but with a broader electorate, which is more sympathetic to undocumented migrants than Republican leaders are.
As I noted earlier, it is high time that Republicans adjust their position to show that, while they want to police our borders, they are sympathetic to the plight of millions of immigrants who are already here and who will never be deported. We need to find a way to legalize their status instead of demonizing that as an “amnesty.” Providing an opportunity to young people whose parents came here illegally–the aim of the DREAM Act–is a good place to start.
I thought this "thoughtful" and "compassionate" approach is what we did with Simpson-Mazolli? How'd that work out? There may be no winning way here; it's just lose/lose.

Sorry, must add that I'm not disagreeing with you but rattling on (and when I read over my own comment to look for typos, it sounded like I was on an attack head of steam … not intended) n nI don't believe Republicans can imitate Democrats and win anybody over — and I don't mean they can't embrace some of the exact policies, only that they have to own them the way Dems own certain things: Dems seem to own immigration, free birth control for all women, no repeal of abortion, and labor, including non-union working people. Republicans seem to own lowering taxes, the 2nd Amendment, a strong national defense … and, according to Obama and the MSM, hating immigrants, destroying Medicare and Social Security and pushing Granny off a cliff, hating school teachers, wanting all sick people to go die, and are a constant threat to force women into back alleys with coat hangers. Sorry to sound so negative, but I truly believe the GOP must overcome all of that.
I cannot agree more with your comments. GOP has a long way to go to adapt for the new demographic situation. White middle age men are not longer enough to win the election. Republicans need to find something to offer emigrants – to be simply the party of low and order and deport all illegal is not going to cut. However, the issue is much wider. Romney was not able to reach America. He didn’t have a plan or at least he could not eloquently and passionately present it. You cannot be on defense all the time; the initiative needs to be taken away from your opponent and he needs to be pounded all the time on any issue. Can anybody imagine Chris Christy to win New Jersey if he would run his campaign like Romney.
We need to start a grass roots movement to get young people to voluntarily quit their jobs and their university enrollments to create vacancies for all the illegals who were granted amnesty under the DREAM act. I am dead serious about this.

Wouldn’t it be interesting if one of majority Senator Harry Reid’s son’s as Rory was abducted for ransom, his wife Landra maimed by a drunken driver illegal alien or his only daughter Lana was kidnapped or this mild mannered bespectacled Liberal hypocrite ended up in a ditch in Searchlight, Nevada himself. He certainly then would alter h is lobotomized mind about encouraging more itinerant persons into our country and certainly would pass harsher laws. This man seems to never have thought about the daily carnage in the streets or on the highways, or the terrible toll on families, left to pick up the pieces after a drunken illegal alien has slaughtered a daughter, son or grandmother? n nIf any of these Socialist rebels to the American way of life was confronted by the spreading intoxicated illegal migrant or immigrant driving a car, perhaps they would reconsider allowing this refuge from the gutter into an already overpopulated land.
