Obama: Intervening to Save Hamas?

So the president called the Israeli prime minister today and, in that phone call, called for an “immediate ceasefire” with Hamas—and he said he wanted that ceasefire to work toward “ strengthening the Palestinian Authority.” It’s very possible everything the president said was disingenuous; he knows Israel isn’t going to accept an immediate ceasefire, in part because Hamas won’t either and in part because the latest Channel 10 poll says an astounding 89 percent of Israelis want the war to continue. So he gets to be for something nice without having to deal with the consequences of its actually happening.

For if it did happen, it would be a disaster for the United States—America would be pulling Hamas’s chestnuts out of the fire and implicitly accepting the legitimacy of the use of terror against civilian populations as a bargaining tool in international negotiations.

But it’s also very possible the president isn’t being disingenuous. In which case he has really crossed a—do I dare—red line here no other American leader ever has. Obama doesn’t like the pictures he’s seeing, he doesn’t like Bibi, he doesn’t like the fact that even Israel’s liberals are in a belligerent frame of mind after weeks of missile attacks against population centers, he isn’t running for reelection, he doesn’t care about donors or Jewish voters, he believes in his heart of hearts that the root cause of regional instability is Israel’s gains in the 1967 war, and in service of all these feelings and beliefs, he’s decided Israel is in the wrong and that Hamas needs to be saved from Israel’s might. In which case, he is personally intervening against an American ally with a legitimately elected and deeply fractious coalition government on behalf of a terrorist organization.

I report. You decide.

  1. CHRIS BEH says:

I have so many American Israeli friends who live in Israel and have never voted for anyone but the Democrat candidate for President. They are dumb struck how incompetent and at this point, malevolent, towards Israel Obama is. They are truly afraid of how much more trouble he can cause before his term is over. Israel should ignore Obama. Everyone else in the Middle East already is.

  2. JOEL TRACY says:

There is an article out since this morning titled along the lines of Defense official says if Hamas is destroyed something worse will replace it. In light of what Obama says today, possibly this is one of those floater articles you read about from time to time. I didn’t read the piece. It would seem obvious that this could be true. There has been a great deal of disturbing radical groups formed in the last few years in the middle east, in particular in Syria and Iraq. I read Lebanon is in poor shape once again. And as an earlier article on the sight mentions Libya is in chaos once again. Egypt hurts too.

Then again if Hamas is weakened and even replaced (unlikely I would guess), possibly something better could come along. There is a piece on The Weekly Standard’s sight that alludes to many in Gaza being tired of Hamas and wanting something new to govern the territory.

Hard to say of course where the President is wanting to go with this. With him, one never knows. My personal feeling is he doesn’t have a good track record as a successful problem solver. if anything he tends to have a Midas touch at making things worse.

Overall tough, sad situation. Hopfully the situation can be improved for all, and violence come to an end soon.

  3. RICHARD HUTCHESON says:

You are being charitable to Obama to say he believes “the root cause of regional instability is Israel’s gains in the 1967 war”.

  4. BRUCE GOTTLIEB says:

It’s not that Obama wants Israel to withdraw to the 1967 lines. In my opinion he believes that the creation of Israel was an historical anomaly. Perhaps that is why the LA Times refuses to release the video of A 2003 speech at a function honoring Edward Said.

  5. KENT LYON says:

I formed my own opinion long before this information and post, Mr. Podhoretz. In my humble opinion, Barack Obama is a hard core anti-Semite who is more than happy to cashier Israel. The main restraint on his doing so is the opinion of the American people–particularly such “undesirables” as conservative Evangelicals. To the contrary, as you note, Obama enjoys the unconditional support of 85% of American Jews. Why, pray tell? Does American Jewry have a death wish for Israel? It seems to me that they do.

  6. TIKI SHAPIRA says:

    Obama saving Hamas!
Being brought up as a Muslim and educated by US/JEW hater rev. Jeremiah Wright he just can’t help himself. It has become part of his DNA.

  7. STEPHEN RITTENBERG says:

Liberalism has become a utopian faith. Whether practiced by Jews or Obama, Utopianism always requires scapegoats to explain its inevitable failures. Jews are the eternal scapegoats and Israel the target of enraged disappointment.

  8. E B TRAININ says:

    John,
You always say it like it is.
Kerry may be totally disingenuous and clueless but
the “brains” behind his middle east policy is Obama.
I hate to even say it but maybe the far right radicals
are right: do we have a Muslim in the white house??

  9. CHERYL WALKER says:

Obama may have been baptized a Christian, but the inculcation in Islam during his formative years in Indonesia and his past and current actions have many questioning his heart….did he truly convert, or is he, at heart, Muslim? There are more than a few people who have come to the conclusion that in his heart, he’s Muslim. Being convinced of this, for these people, his actions toward Israel’s leaders and the Jews, themselves, speak to his hatred of all things, people and places, Jewish.
