Cedars of Lebanon: Why Sufferings Come Upon Man

- Abstract

If a man sees that sufferings are coming upon him, let him examine his deeds, for it is written: Let us search out and try our ways, and return unto the Lord. If he has searched and found no explanation, let him assume the explanation to be his neglect of the study of Torah, for it is written: Happy is the man whom Thou chastenest, O Lord, and teachest out of Thy law. (That is, he is led to the study of Torah through sufferings—Rashi.) If he has weighed this possibility, yet found it unconvincing, then he may be sure that his sufferings are the chastenings of love, for it is written: Whom the Lord loveth, He correcteth. (That is, the Holy One causes him to suffer in this world even though he is sinless, in order to increase beyond his deserts his reward in the world to come—Rashi.)
