To the Editor:
In commenting on Joshua Muravchik’s “Why the Democrats Finally Won” [January], I would argue, risking the charge of oversimplification, that the overwhelming reason for the Democratic victory was George Bush, probably the most inept presidential candidate since Alf Landon or Wendell Willkie. While Republicans I know ritualistically wanted Bush to be reelected, they were not saddened by his loss.
What else but ineptitude can explain the post-Gulf war voter-approval rating for Bush in the 80-90-percent range being transformed several months later into a 30-40 percent rating and, finally, electoral defeat? No national calamity had occurred which could be blamed on Bush. Even though Saddam Hussein remained in Baghdad, still, “’twas a glorious victory” which satisfied almost everybody, even the UN internationalists.
