Czech-Jewish Writing

To the Editor:

I enjoyed reading Edouard Roditi’s “The ‘Return’ of Europe’s Jews” [July] but wish he would have included some mention of Czech literature as well, where Jewish writers and topics have also recently regained a prominent place. Most noteworthy is the writer, Arnost Lustig, whose stories about the ghetto of Theresienstadt have won wide acclaim both in and outside his country and have been translated into several languages, including English (under the title Night and Hope). Lustig treats the moral and emotional predicament of the Jew under the Nazis, and the behavior of the Nazi toward him in its universal human aspects, in terms of what, mainly since the French existentialist writers, we have learned to call human isolation and alienation.
