- Abstract
TWO years ago this spring, when the Economic Department of the Jewish Agency put out its New York shingle, a flood of prospectors poured up the high brownstone stoop and into the reconverted corridors of the Agency’s archaic mansion on a sedate street in the East 60′s. Israel, then less than twelve months old, had just won its war against the Arabs. The new state glowed with the rosy promise of a bimillennial dream come true. The Agency-and the Israeli consulate, in another mansion four blocks to the north-were overrun by eager applicants for aid and information on investment in Israel.
