King of Pianists
- Abstract
VLADIMIR HOROWITZ is the king of pianists. Tickets for the limited number of concerts he chooses to play are sold out as soon as his enthusiastic public is informed; the prices charged are higher than those for any other solo instrumentalist, and rather than play for a mere fee he receives by far the larger part of the box-office proceeds. Of the numerous recordings he has made in the past half-century, most are still available, and big sellers to boot-the German subsidiary of RCA has to this date issued no fewer than twenty of his older LP’s in what is grandly called the “Vladimir Horowitz Edition.” All his recent live performances, when they have not been issued as regular commercial recordings, are available, for those whose tastes run to such things, on so-called private tapes.
