Level Sunlight, by Maurice Samuel

- Abstract

Level Sunlight, in its own unsystematic but skillful way, manages to combine between the same covers a spiritual autobiography and “confession”; a historical sketch of the development of Zionism, and of the controversies that both divided and animated it; a description of the achievements, as well as shortcomings, of Israel; a consideration of the relations of the new state to its own past and to the contemporary scene, to the Diaspora, the West, and the world at large; and, finally, a prospectus for the future. Richly documented from personal observation, many visits to Israel, and the long experience of a Zionist, Mr. Samuel’s book guides us into the backgrounds of Israel, and offers a soul-searching analysis of her present situation.
