Miniatures of Early American Jews, by Hannah R. London

- Abstract

Hannah London is a specialist on the portraiture of early American Jews. This is her third book on the subject. She tells us, in this book, of those who painted miniatures of early American Jews, of the miniatures themselves, and of those whose pictures were painted. About these she has swallowed a pious fable or two: we are told again of “Captain” Jacob De Leon, with Jacob De La Motta and “Major” Benjamin Nones, carrying General De Kalb, mortally wounded, from the battlefield of Camden; of Rabbi Seixas at the inaugural of Washington; and of Walter Scott with Rebecca Gratz in mind when he was writing Ivanhoe.
