Sartre's Grandchildren
- Abstract
To the Editor:
Hilton Kramer’s deft analysis of the mendacity of Jean-Paul Sartre and his cohorts [“The Flowers on Sartre's Grave,” July] is necessary because, as Mr. Kramer points out, the legacy of Sartre will “continue to poison the intellectual atmosphere.”
As far as I know, the only authorized biographer of Sartre is John Gerassi, professor of political science at the City University of New York and author of Jean-Paul Sartre: Hated Conscience of His Century. In his book, Gerassi, a proud disciple of Sartre, recounts Sartre’s reaction to the 1972 Lod airport massacre in which sixteen Puerto Rican tourists (some of them nuns) and twelve Israeli civilians were murdered by Japanese terrorists. “Though [Sartre] lamented the death of various American nuns who were caught by the Japanese machine guns, [he] saw this act of terrorism as an example of international cooperation among leftists.”
