Singer and Friend
- Abstract
To the Editor;
I am not a regular reader of COMMENTARY, but I picked up the May issue because I wanted to read the articles on Israel. I then looked through the rest of the magazine, and came across Terry Teachout’s “Mourning Nancy LaMott.” It is truly a wonderful piece of writing. I confess I had not heard of Nancy LaMott, but after reading the article . . ., I rushed out to my local record store to buy her CD’s.
Everyone hopes for (or, more accurately, fantasizes) a friend who, after one’s own death, will be able to convey to others what he or she was “really” like and make even strangers feel that the world has been depleted by one’s death. Nancy LaMott was clearly blessed with a talent for friendship, but she was blessed as well by having Mr. Teachout as her friend. I fully believe that the world has been depleted by her dreadfully premature death, and I thank Mr. Teachout for sharing his memories of her.
