The Podhoretz Papers
The Podhoretz Papers
To the Editor:
Norman Podhoretz’s original article [“My Negro Problem—And Ours,” February; “Letters from Readers,” March, April, May] has produced comment that is perhaps twice as significant as anything he said. I have followed it for three months without finding a suggestion that some men who are incapable of loving the abstraction “Negro” are yet quite capable of loving the abstraction “justice.” The latter may be a frigid, inhuman emotion, but at least it would immunize us against tolerance of such things as the Birmingham affair. For one, I believe that lack of it is what makes us vulnerable to many kinds of psychopathy, including virulent racism.
