The Test
- 09.03.2008 - 1:12 AMWill the mainstream media succeed in defining the nomination of Sarah Palin as an ill-considered, morally questionable, full-of-holes disaster? Every effort is being made to ensure it; it will be a fascinating test of the continuing power of a business otherwise in catastrophic decline. If her speech tonight is as good as her performance on Friday afternoon was, the media will fail. If it isn’t an unqualified triumph, it will be treated as though it had been a calamity. The question now is whether there is anything Palin can do that will prevent the mainstream media from treating her speech as though it were a calamity, or whether the story line of the past two days has become hardened into unquestioned and unquestionable orthodoxy.
