Evidently, This Is Not a Joke

John Podhoretz - 04.25.2008 - 3:45 PM

It appears Honduras has illegal sockpiles.

AP: “The Bush administration, responding to pleas from the U.S. textile industry, is imposing a temporary tariff on socks imported from Honduras.”

I hear it’s an open-toe-and-shut case. American manufacturers were really getting hosed.

And so begins the long lineage of which Contentions readers can come up with the most inane foot-related puns.

    I am not immune.

President George W. Bush, in a recent interview had these remarks…

“The Haneous act is yet another example of Honduras Jockeying for position in the global sock and undergarment market. Neither Secretive nor Victorian, Honduras’ textile mills are ill-prepared to fill the shoes of the American worker, in Fruits, Looms, or anything else for that matter.”

I think we have stretched this discussion far enough and unraveled the truth. On the hole, this subject really stinks!

I certainly hope this tariff will bring Honduras to heel. They’ve been pulling the wool over our eyes for too long.

    I want my cheap socks!!!

Protectionism screws consumers. China, it turns out, is the worlds biggest exporter of socks, because of efficiency and lower labor costs. Socks are pretty good. Check them out at Costco, actually at any US store. US sock producers need to adapt, or find a better business plan, not run to Congress for relief, which benefits the few at the expense of the many.

Same with advocates of crop subsidies, high tarriffs, and barriers protecting the benefits of labor or inefficient industry. The world is flat now. Deal with it. Learn how to compete.

Wealth has been created every time govrenment gets its boot off the throat of the free market.
