Flotsam and Jetsam

Jennifer Rubin - 10.07.2008 - 8:44 AM

Only in this election could it go unremarked up by the MSM that Barack Obama’s national finance chair and close advisor Penny Pritzker was hip-deep in the subprime mortgage mess.

With a local Florida reporter, Sarah Palin shows she has polished her interview skills. It remains a bit of a mystery why she did so poorly with Katie Couric.

The least credible column title ever: “The Media Give Palin A Pass.” Yeah, right.

In the tale of “What happened to YouTube of that SNL bailout skit?” you get the sense that the writers there know more about the subprime mortgage mess than the network news division.

We learn more every day: “As a state senator, Democrat Barack Obama awarded $75,000 in government grants to a Chicago social service organization led by a rabbi who is also his wife’s cousin, records show.”

Ruth Marcus, I think, grossly underestimates the cost of and problems with Barack Obama’s health plan. But she does an entirely credible and fair job explaining John McCain’s plan (giving him credit for improving the status quo and eliminating the distortion of employer-provided insurance coverage). Which is better than you can say for the rest of the media — or, sorry to say,  for McCain himself.

Only 59%  of voters would like to replace the entire Congress?

The Wall Street Journal joins the chorus urging John McCain to run for divided government and against the Democratic Congress. McCain better hurry up or the Congressional Republicans will start running for divided government and against a Democratic President.

Now this from Sarah Palin is a lot of fun. “Hang on to your hats,” she says. Indeed.

Are you shocked, shocked to find out from Dan Blatt that his Congressman Rep. Henry Waxman aren’t planning any hearings on Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae? (If not shocked, disgusted perhaps.) Chris Shays is trying to get those hearings. Good luck with that.

You gotta love the media elites: not only is it beneath them to discuss a potential president’s connections to a domestic terrorist but they “shouldn’t let them [those mere politicians and voters, I suppose] do it.” Perhaps the pundits could provide a list of approved topics.

Megan McArdle on the AP’s contention that raising Bill Ayers is racist: “This is . . . what’s the correct word?  Right, lunatic.”

A soup-to-nuts explanation of the financial meltdown and the role of Freddie, Fannie and their Congressional protectors is here.

Jackson Diehl says it: “A good deal of what Biden said was exaggerated, distorted or simply false — especially in his nominal area of expertise, foreign policy.” Jeffrey Goldberg agrees. So why can’t other MSM pundits and honest Democrats? (Do we think Obama knows we really didn’t kick Hezbollah out of Lebanon?

There is something infuriating about dragging the head of Lehman Brothers before Congress to explain his art collection while no one thinks to revisit the $245M in  Fannie Mae bonuses alone (not counting the $90M Franklin Raines and $20M James Johnson salaries  hauled in) in a five year period and the $4.8M in campaign donations to Congressmen and Senators from Freddie and Fannie. Perhaps everyone should just pay it all back.
