Angry

Jennifer Rubin - 05.09.2008 - 9:55 AM

There is no doubt that Michelle Obama has some anger issues. It might seem puzzling as to why a rich, successful, and well-educated woman with a good shot at becoming First Lady should be so darn mad. Maybe she should listen to P.J. O’Rourke who explains a bit about fairness:

I’ve got a 10-year-old at home. She’s always saying, “That’s not fair.” When she says this, I say, “Honey, you’re cute. That’s not fair. Your family is pretty well off. That’s not fair. You were born in America. That’s not fair. Darling, you had better pray to God that things don’t start getting fair for you.”

I think something else is going on here as well: good old-fashioned pandering. Remember: the Obamas are convinced that the little guys are bitter. So what better way to bond with them then to join in the whine festival. “You’ve got electric bills you can’t pay? I know what you mean! $10,000 summer camp bill bum me out too!” And so it goes.

The right’s continued attempts to paint Michelle Obama as the “angry black woman” are really disgusting. Lots of people complain about student loans — I sure did because the cost of college has spiraled out of control.

    OK what about this?

After comparing positions on immigration reform, the KKK endorses McCain. Is he responsible?

It’s interesting how Teresa injects race into it when no one else had. Quotation marks mean you can quote someone saying or writing that exact thing.

What is her complaint? That if you go to university (which is a must, eh?) you have to take a high-paying job to be able to pay down the loans. Oh the humanity! Graduates can´t afford to be social workers or run a small non-profit, so society (i.e. you) should pay up. They need help to feel good about themselves. That is her idea of fairness. Not sure if that is anger, but I am sure I have never seen anyone with a bigger sense of entitlement.

It’s interesting, Jennifer, that you ask this question, because it’s been one that has interested me for a long time. Leftist anger of in the late 19th/early 20th century made a certain amount of sense, because Leftism was an “underclass” phenomenon. It was embraced in the ghettos, by people who lived in six floor walk-ups without plumbing or electricity. Now, the ones who most display that anger are the upper classes, not just the wealthy, but the super wealthy. As I’ve concluded in a post I did on the subject (http://www.bookwormroom.com/2008/04/30/anger-on-the-left/), anger and a sense of ill-usage are part of the Leftist ideology. Leftism both attracts the angry and creates the anger, and that is so regardless of the person’s objective reality.

Teresa, no one made her take out those loans in the first place, and coming from a woman whose household income has averaged about a million dollars per years for the past 7 years (the years for which the Obamas released their taxes), I find it grotesque for her to expect sympathy for her plight in repaying those loans. Her constant whining about how hard it was to pay them back should make ordinary people want to puke.

A more interesting question when it comes to Michelle Obama is why her salary at the hospital company she works for was tripled soon after her husband was elected to the Senate. Just before he was elected she was earning about 120k per year; but after his election her salary jumped to over 300k, without any actual change in her job description, duties, or authority! Given that her husband would be (and in fact has been)involved in legislation and earmarks that would affect the company she works for, does this not seem like a subtle bribe? Certainly her employer was expecting some quid pro quo to justify such a large raise.

Mrs. Obama reminds me of a lot of the non-profit lawyers I work with. They go to law school, run up big student loan debts, take a job with a non-profit that pays $20,000 a year and then complain endlessly about the evils of capitalism.

I’m black, about to finish high school, and Michelle has convinced me not to go to college because I don’t want to have to repay loans. Thank you for the wise advice, Michelle.

Bill, don’t worry. If Mrs. Obama and her hubbie hav their way the government will pick up the tab and/or force those horrible loan sharks to forgive your loans! So, sign all the loan agreement you want - Obamas to the resuce!

Michelle Obama is living proof of the embarrassment that are the nouveau rich. She doesn’t know how to behave, i.e. lack of restraint and respect, in regard to her new-found riches, as demonstrated when she converses about the costs of an affluent lifestyle as an undue burden, as if it were commonplace.
