United Nations Security Council Resolution 1559 was a resolution adopted by the United Nations Security Council on September 2, 2004[1]. It called upon Lebanon to establish its sovereignty over all of its land and called upon “foreign forces” (generally interpreted as referring but not limited to Syria) to withdraw from Lebanon and to cease intervening in the internal politics of Lebanon. The resolution also called on all Lebanese and non-Lebanese militias to disband and declared support for a “free and fair electoral process”.

Nine countries voted in favor: Angola, Benin, Chile, France, Germany, Romania, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Six countries abstained: Algeria, Brazil, the People’s Republic of China, Pakistan, the Philippines and Russia.

The resolution was sponsored by France and the United States. The cooperation between these two nations on an issue concerning the Middle East was seen as a significant improvement in their relationship, compared to their earlier bitter disagreement over the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Because Lebanon was governed by France as a League of Nations mandate 1919-1943, France has long taken a special interest in Lebanon.

Read up on what actually happened… the 2006 Lebanon war. The United States and France tried to push for a resolution to the United Nations which tried to make sure that Hezbollah did not gain from Israeli withdrawal of southern Lebanon, through the draft of a UN Security Council resolution similar to the Siniora Plan. Ultimately it seems the UN did not follow up on this plan and the result was Hezbollah has become more powerful and legitimate in Lebanon. “Kicked” did not mean military action, but it meant diplomatically through the UN security council.

Here is a guy who voted for the war in Iraq, against the surge, and whose widely-proclaimed solution for Iraq was to chop it into 3 pieces. His historical ignorance evidently includes any knowledge of what happened when the British cut India into 3 pieces– a sectarian bloodbath that killed millions and displaced tens of millions. Biden was the joke. Whether or not most people will realize that Biden is simply a great BS-er depends on how honest the media will report Joe’s repeated gaffes and errors.

If the gaffe is that he said “Hezbollah” when he meant “Syria”, it’s still a stupid rewriting of history, and preposterously dumb, and to suggest otherwise is a remarkable example of “deference.”
