On wikipedia

United Nations Security Council Resolution 1559 was a resolution adopted by the United Nations Security Council on September 2, 2004[1]. It called upon Lebanon to establish its sovereignty over all of its land and called upon "foreign forces" (generally interpreted as referring but not limited to Syria) to withdraw from Lebanon and to cease intervening in the internal politics of Lebanon. The resolution also called on all Lebanese and non-Lebanese militias to disband and declared support for a "free and fair electoral process".

Nine countries voted in favor: Angola, Benin, Chile, France, Germany, Romania, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Six countries abstained: Algeria, Brazil, the People's Republic of China, Pakistan, the Philippines and Russia.

The resolution was sponsored by France and the United States. The cooperation between these two nations on an issue concerning the Middle East was seen as a significant improvement in their relationship, compared to their earlier bitter disagreement over the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Because Lebanon was governed by France as a League of Nations mandate 1919-1943, France has long taken a special interest in Lebanon.

Negative adds tells us that McCain has no vision. That is the question that is raised when someone chooses to run 100% negative adds in times when vision is needed.

What when he is whinning the election he whould be president he will also seeks negative war solutions for the USA

Only bad leaders and regimes run negative adds and solution. History an China, Old Russia Hitler Germany are endless examples of these conspiracy ennemy and racial solutions. Cynically the intensify when the leader actually needs vision and got stuck. Negative adds show no respect and that is the basis of bad regime like racism.

Good luck and it is your task as a journalist to fight for decency. A lot of people in the world watch and see that USA looses respect amoung the leaders and therefore it is hard to respect the USA. Please USA, show respect and guide us. We need each other.

To all right wingers:

Read up on what actually happened... the 2006 Lebanon war. The United States and France tried to push for a resolution to the United Nations which tried to make sure that Hezbollah did not gain from Israeli withdrawal of southern Lebanon, through the draft of a UN Security Council resolution similar to the Siniora Plan. Ultimately it seems the UN did not follow up on this plan and the result was Hezbollah has become more powerful and legitimate in Lebanon. "Kicked" did not mean military action, but it meant diplomatically through the UN security council.

All of the above quotes are from Wikipedia and related sources.

"On 4 August, the USA and France presented a draft UN Security Council resolution attempting to resolve the conflict. Contrary to the Siniora Plan, the draft resolution did not require Israel to withdraw from southern Lebanon until an international force was in place; it said that Israel needed only to cease all "offensive" military activities, while it demanded that Hezbollah cease all military activities; and it demanded that Hezbollah immediately released captured Israelis, while stating that the issue regarding captured Lebanese was to be resolved at a later stage. Lebanon's reaction to the draft was very negative."

"Hezbollah maintains strong support among Lebanon's Shi'a population, and gained a surge of support from Lebanon's general population immediately following the 2006 Lebanon War"

"Hezbollah, which started with only a small militia, has grown to an organization with seats in the Lebanese government, a radio and a satellite television-station, and programs for social development.[19] Despite a June 2008 certification by the United Nations that Israel had withdrawn from all Lebanese territory, [20] in August of that year, Lebanon's new Cabinet unanimously approved a draft policy statement which secures Hezbollah's existence as an armed organization and guarantees its right to "liberate or recover occupied lands."

"On 11 August 2006, the United Nations Security Council unanimously approved UN Resolution 1701 in an effort to end the hostilities. The resolution, which was approved by both Lebanese and Israeli governments the following days, called for disarmament of Hezbollah, for withdrawal of Israel from Lebanon, and for the deployment of Lebanese soldiers and an enlarged United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) force in southern Lebanon. The Lebanese army began deploying in southern Lebanon on 17 August 2006. The blockade was lifted on 8 September 2006.[33] On 1 October, 2006, most Israeli troops withdrew from Lebanon, though the last of the troops continue to occupy the border-straddling village of Ghajar.[34] In the time since the enactment of UNSCR 1701 both the Lebanese government and UNIFIL have stated that they will not disarm Hezbollah.[35][36][37] The remains of the two captured soldiers, whose fates were unknown, were returned to Israel on 16 July 2008 as part of a prisoner exchange."

The blockade was lifted on 8 September 2006.[33] On 1 October, 2006, most Israeli troops withdrew from Lebanon, though the last of the troops continue to occupy the border-straddling village of Ghajar.[34] In the time since the enactment of UNSCR 1701 both the Lebanese government and UNIFIL have stated that they will not disarm Hezbollah.[35][36][37] The remains of the two captured soldiers, whose fates were unknown, were returned to Israel on 16 July 2008 as part of a prisoner exchange.”

The Joe Biden I watched in the debate is a complete ignoramus. When the stock market crashed in 1929, Hoover was President, not FDR, and television networks didn't even exist until ten years later. Running for VP, he doesn't even know which Article governs the office or what it says (Palin got it right, by the way). Then there's the bizarre idea that ANYBODY ever kicked Hezbollah out of Lebanon. He claims the expenditures, Iraq vs Afghanistan, are 120 to one, when the figure is actually 7 to one. And Katie's restaurant closed 20 years ago. Add to all that the chutzpah it takes to claim that Obama never said he would "meet without preconditions"-- when the whole world heard him say it-- and you're left with a very unfavorable impression of Joe Biden.

Here is a guy who voted for the war in Iraq, against the surge, and whose widely-proclaimed solution for Iraq was to chop it into 3 pieces. His historical ignorance evidently includes any knowledge of what happened when the British cut India into 3 pieces-- a sectarian bloodbath that killed millions and displaced tens of millions. And this what the Democrats are pleased to call a "foreign policy expert."

Shmuel is dissembling as fast as he or she can. "but these Republicans come across as a joke, even when they’re talking points are correct. "??? Only to the Daily Kossack tunnel-visioned. Biden was the Jayson Blair of debating. He got so much wrong that people are still counting the tally (excluding the mainstream-media, for whom looking at such things is against their faith that Obama will lead them to the promised land... the White House).

Biden claims McCain is out of touch but Joe couldn't even remember that one of his favorite restaurants back home had closed down almost 2 decades ago. He distorted the lead general in Afghanistan's quotes (Sarah Palin mispronounced the name but got the facts of the quote right... so much for who's the joke here... it's Biden), he flat out lied about Obama's position on meeting leaders without preconditions - since he criticized Obama himself for the position in the primaries and the position was still on the Obama website the night of the debate.

There's much more. He got McCain's votes wrong, mischaracterized McCain's health-care plan, etc. etc.

Biden was the joke. Whether or not most people will realize that Biden is simply a great BS-er depends on how honest the media will report Joe's repeated gaffes and errors.

They won't because they're too busy turning the Fourth Estate into a branch of the Obama campaign. Sack em all, I say.

Michael
I think Biden mixed up the PLO and Hezbollah. In 1982, Israel did kick the PLO out of Lebanon. Maybe that's where Biden's "we" comes from. Then France, Italy and the US sent troops to Beirut. Maybe that's where his "NATO" idea comes from. If this is an example of his profound grasp of foreign policy, God help us.

CJ are you honestly suggesting that Biden and Obama urged the insertion of NATO troops into Lebanon to keep the Syrians (who he can't seem to distinguish from Hezbollah) out? And that that happened after the US and France somehow "kicked" Syria out of Lebanon?

Where, other than in the transcript of the debate where he spun his fantasy, is there any evidence whatsoever of him and Obama pushing for a NATO invasion of Lebanon?

If the gaffe is that he said "Hezbollah" when he meant "Syria", it's still a stupid rewriting of history, and preposterously dumb, and to suggest otherwise is a remarkable example of "deference."

Michael, you're also wrong to say Lebanon kicked Syria out of their country all by themselves. I specifically remember the Bush administration (and Condi in particular) talking about the need for the Syrian troops to leave Lebanon several years ago, especially after the assassination of a former Lebanese prime minister. So yes, this is a minor gaffe on Biden's part - he meant to say Syria when he said Hezbollah. You just don't want to give Biden deference on this issue cuz you're probably a republican partisan looking for every excuse to bash him. Try again, pal.

[...] Joe Biden’s Alternate Universe In Thursday night’s vice presidential debate between Senator Joe Biden and Governor Sarah Palin, Biden said the strangest and most ill-informed thing I have ever heard about Lebanon in my life. “When we kicked — along with France, we kicked Hezbollah out of Lebanon, I said and Barack said, “Move NATO forces in there. Fill the vacuum, because if you don’t know — if you don’t, Hezbollah will control it.” Now what’s happened? Hezbollah is a legitimate part of the government in the country immediately to the north of Israel.” [Emphasis added.] [...]

Sorry; Biden wasn't referring to anything that actually happened, because he talked about what should have been done after Hezbollah got kicked out of Lebanon.

That didn't happen. It didn't come close to having happened.

He was just making stuff up.

Off the deep end but Joe could have said “Well Gwen, neither my running mate nor myself have the qualifications to lead this country in tough times so can I have another question?” and only a few would have heard. A lesser number would have understood. The primary intense focus was on Palin to bring to life the Hollywood character so the ingrained in the media and marketed to the populace. This, as all, elections are about character. For those that possess it, the choice is clear.

This is probably what Biden was referring to: On 11 August 2006, the United Nations Security Council unanimously approved UN Resolution 1701 in an effort to end the hostilities. The blockade was lifted on 8 September 2006.[33] On 1 October, 2006, most Israeli troops withdrew from Lebanon, though the last of the troops continue to occupy the border-straddling village of Ghajar.[34] In the time since the enactment of UNSCR 1701 both the Lebanese government and UNIFIL have stated that they will not disarm Hezbollah

You're correct in saying this was a big gaffe on the part of Biden, but your own logic about what he meant to say is equally flawed. It's completely clear that he was talking about Syria at first, not Hezbollah. The concern was that with Syria out of the picture, Hezbollah would come along and fill the power vacuum that was left with Syria's withdrawal. This was more a slip of the tongue than any bizarre and out of this universe statement (OK, the US and France thing was pretty bizarre, but still, the main point that he and Obama called for NATO troups to come in and fill the power vacuum is clear). Your argument that it is clear that he was talking about Hezbollah all the way through shows less understanding than Biden's own statement. Please think these things through before publishing them.

“Biden Delivers Gaffes - MSM Doesn’t Catch…”

The above comment should be slightly revised to read:

Biden Delivers Gaffes - MSM Doesn’t want to Catch…It prefers looking the other way

Actually, I would amend the above to read as such:

Biden Delivers Gaffes - MSM Doesn't want to Catch...too busy laughing themselves silly over Tina Fey's latest impersonation of Sarah Palin

(a little long, admittedly, but you get the point)
