Allow me in good faith to point out a discrepancy in the August issue.
Michael Harrington, in his excellent article “Slums, Old and New,” indicates that the farm population of the United States is less than 13 million (p. 118)—apparently meant to be a current estimate, although no date is given. In Asher Brynes' article “Economics of the Farm Problem” the farm population is said to be 1\8 of the 1954 population (p. 112)—that is, about 20 million—and he indicates that the 1960 census will show a farm population of 17 million. . . .
Otherwise convincing and well-written articles lose much of their power and tend to appear over-stated through such small errors.
