Abstract –
In the 1940's, Louis Finkelstein, the president of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, invited a group of scholars to contribute to a two-volume handbook entitled The Jews: Their History, Culture, and Religion. To his astonishment, Finkelstein discovered that There are probably a hundred people, and more, whose profession it is to discover all that can be known about the Jews in Jerusalem in the 1st century; there does not seem to be one who has the same duty for the Jews of New York in the 20th century.
