March Madness? Fake ObamaCare Enrollment Numbers.

The administration is claiming a limited victory by saying the number of those enrolled in ObamaCare has now hit 5 million with two weeks to go until the March 31 deadline. If accurate, the number does represent a steep increase over the 4.2 million that were said to have signed up at the beginning of the month. At this rate, administration cheerleaders reason, the goal of 7 million enrolled in the Affordable Care Act may yet be reached at some point in the near future, if not quite on time. This burst of enrollments is seen as a vindication of President Obama’s all-out push to promote the law including such questionable activities as appearing on the “Between Two Ferns” web show where he traded barbs with comedian Zach Galifianakis.

Humanities: Their Own Worst Enemy

As a career academic, I try to be optimistic about our colleges and universities, particularly the fate of the humanities. But even optimists will find their hearts sinking at this interview of Sidonie Smith, who holds a named chair in the humanities at the University of Michigan. Smith is the author of a new book, Manifesto for the Humanities: Transforming Doctoral Education in Good Enough Times.

The End of Europe

In the United States, nearly eight years of stagnation, hardship, a pervasive sense of decline, and seemingly insurmountable challenges abroad have taken their toll. Add to this the depressed anxiety concomitant with the renewed threat of intermittent mass casualty attacks directed from or inspired by radical Islamist terrorists overseas, and you have the ingredients for populist rebellion. Fueling insurgent presidential candidacies on both the left and the right with a potent appeal to a significant segment of American society is the perception that the traditional remedies for social, economic, and foreign ills have failed. Only something very new, even potentially radical, can ease their conditions now.

Donald’s Birther Madness Revisited

It seems like more than just a couple of years ago, but it wasn’t that long ago that Donald Trump was the nation’s leading birther. The Donald’s obsession with stories about Barack Obama not being an American citizen seemed in line with the carnival sideshow image he had cultivated as a reality TV star and made it difficult for a lot of us to take him seriously when he started to run for president. But in retrospect, Trump’s ravings about the birth certificate and Kenya were not so crazy. Not that there was any substance to his charges. But it was good preparation for a presidential run predicated on the fact that a lot of Americans are now so cynical about government they are willing to applaud anything he says, no matter how absurd, outrageous, or divorced from the truth. It is in this context we should view Trump’s insidious effort to torpedo rival Ted Cruz’s candidacy.

Terrorism at Sea

U.S. counterterrorism officials are expert at defending against the last terrorist attack, hence the obsession with water bottles and other liquids at American airports. That’s not to say that the Department of Homeland Security shouldn’t correct weakness and defend against threats. The West cannot let its guard down because the terrorists are barbarians both at and potentially within the gates, willing to cause death and destruction not out of anger at some grievance but rather in pursuit of a murderous and nihilistic ideology.
