Are Conservatives Losing the Future?

Janet Hook of the Wall Street Journal reported on a new WSJ/NBC News poll that “finds a marked increase in the share of registered voters identifying themselves as liberals, and an even bigger drop in the share saying they are conservatives.”

From Truth To Slur On ISIS By Trump

Last night in a speech in Florida Donald Trump said something that was perhaps intended to distract the public from his threat/joke about “Second Amendment people” doing something about Hillary Clinton. Trump declared that President Obama was “the founder of ISIS.” Not satisfied with this line which he repeated several times, he added that “the co-founder would be crooked Hillary Clinton.” In doing so, he illustrated a unique ability to take something that is true—the current administration’s responsibility for the rise of ISIS resulting from its ill-considered withdrawal from Iraq and refusal to do something about Syria–into something that sounds like one of the conspiracy theories Trump has promoted in the past. In this way, he simultaneously obscured the truth and lowered the level of political discourse in this campaign even further.

Where Palestinian Aid Really Goes

In the last week, two scandals involving aid to the Palestinians have emerged. In one, a United Nations engineer managing its program for rebuilding homes in Gaza destroyed in the 2014 war between Israel and Hamas was caught funneling building materials to the Hamas terrorist group for their military facilities. In another, the Gaza manager of the World Vision international charity was found to have transferred up to $50 million raised from well-meaning people around the globe to Hamas for its uncharitable activities. Coincidence? I don’t think so and neither should anyone else.

A Theory: Why Obama Gave Iran Cash

Why did the Obama administration make its $400 million payment to Iran on January 17 in untraceable foreign currency and then not only fail to disclose that the payment had been made in cash but withhold that information from Senator Tom Cotton in response to his repeated inquiries about it? According to both former U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey and former Treasury terrorism finance analyst Jonathan Schanzer, President Obama could have paid Iran legally in a conventional banking transaction rather than cash. The administration disclosed the amount of the payment in its January 17 announcement of the deal, but not that it had been made in cash.

Will Trumpism Survive After Trump?

Yesterday, no one got “Cantored.” The phrase refers to the defeat of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor when he was upset in a 2014 primary by a Tea Party challenger. Many fans of Donald Trump, notably among them columnist Ann Coulter and Sarah Palin, were hoping that House Speaker Paul Ryan would suffer the same fate at the hands of Paul Nehlen, the Trumpkin who challenged him for his Wisconsin seat. But despite a lot of national press attention and some encouragement from the GOP presidential nominee himself (though that was soon walked back), Nehlen flopped. Ryan got 84 percent of the vote in what turned out to be an embarrassing showing for those who believe the GOP should be purged not only of those leaders who wish to govern rather than just burn down Capitol Hill but also of members who are as unenthusiastic about Trump and Trumpism, as Ryan has been.
