Satan Sandwiches and House Democrats

A fantastic bit of rhetoric from an enraged leftist Democrat in the House, responding to the outlines of the budget deal: Emanuel Cleaver, a pastor from Missouri, described it as a “sugar-coated Satan sandwich.” And indeed it is. There are no good options for liberal/Left Democrats in the House. If they vote against the bill en masse, they will make Obama look as though he has betrayed his own core principles, and indeed, they may lead to the deal’s collapse if a few more Republicans than agreed to the Boehner bill yesterday decide to vote no. Should that happen, they will destroy the Obama presidency. But if they agree, they are eating that sandwich. Tactically and strategically, this is a political disaster for the Democrats. That won’t mean much to the Tea Partiers in the House, whose opposition to the bill is entirely conviction-driven. But to the extent that a politician’s heart beats within a Tea Partier’s breast, that politician should be able to see the practical benefits to him and his party here.

Democrats Prepare to Brand the GOP the Party of Abusers

A new day for Democrats.

If Senator Al Franken has not resigned by the time you read this, it shouldn’t be long now. On Wednesday, a seventh woman publicly alleged that Franken had tried to force himself on her. That woman, a former Democratic congressional aide, claimed that the future senator justified his actions by contending, “It’s my right as an entertainer.”

Reform Movement Backs Palestinians against Israel on Jerusalem

The Jerusalem fissure.

That Arab and European leaders are protesting President Trump’s intent to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital is no surprise. Nor is it any surprise that groups like J Street and Jewish Voice for Peace joined them. I was, however, genuinely shocked that the leader of America’s largest Jewish denomination also joined the denunciations. Until recently, any mainstream American Jewish leader would have been embarrassed to oppose U.S. recognition of Jerusalem publicly.

Backfire.

As I write, we do not know what might go into President Trump’s planned announcement on Jerusalem. But on at least some of our college campuses, protests are already being prepared.

The Race Is on to Make Mueller Toxic

Keep your powder dry.

Robert Mueller’s probe into the Trump campaign has a credibility problem. At least, that’s what we’re being told with ever-increasing agitation by those with an investment in the probe’s conclusions.

Excommunicating the Abusers

Narrative shaping.

As Jonah Goldberg observed, the ongoing reckoning with abusive men in positions of authority might have begun with the outing of Fox News Channel’s Bill O’Reilly and Roger Ailes. But it didn’t. The “national conversation” that followed the exposure of their abuses focused more on a perceived culture of aggressive masculinity and institutionalized exploitation in conservative circles. It is telling that it required the confirmation of decades-old “open secrets” involving a prominent movie producer and liberal political activist to get the ball rolling on this moment of national reconciliation.
